Hi there! I hope you are having a great afternoon and that I am interrupting it with nonsense that makes you smile.
I was about to head out to the grocery store earlier to make a much needed haul when I noticed a surprise at the front door. It’s something I have been waiting to arrive for almost a month now, so to say I was excited to see it would be a serious understatement.
While opening the box, I had a realization. I get embarrassingly excited over the weirdest things, including this. More times than not, I know exactly what is going to be inside the box, yet I act like it’s Christmas morning and pretend I am opening some kind of present I know nothing about. Every time.
While this may not be the best content for a blog post to some of you, I happen to enjoy reading occasional fluff in the afternoons, so I am hoping this is exactly what this sharing hour does for you.
And hey, I would love to know if I am not alone in some of these things too. Please, if you find the same joy in similar (or even completely different) “little things” feel free to share what they are in the comments!
Things I Get Embarrassingly Excited Over
• falling (and crunching) leaves
Really though. Is there anybody out there who doesn’t like this?
I pulled this picture from the last fall season and just became disappointed to look out my back window to only see a plain deck. Okay, fine… I might be ready for Fall. I channel my inner child and hop around like an idiot the majority of the season up here. #noshame
• the smell of clean laundry
I looove the small of clean laundry.
Right when it’s fresh out of the dryer and warm is the best!
• finding a song to add to my new favorite playlist
… or better yet, hearing one of them while I’m out in public. I am for sure embarrassing to most of those around me.
(Throwback photo to sum up what happens.)
• when I do nothing to my hair, sleep on it, and it looks decent
… which has only happened about a handful of times. Ever.
Today happened to be one of them!
I woke up like this {Flawless}. (<-Please tell me you got that Beyonce reference?)
• all things autumn or pumpkin related
C’mon. You knew this one was coming.
Sorry, but I’m not at all sorry for being this basic and predictable about it.
Ahhh. Must make something pumpkin… now.
• making my bed (or… walking into my room when it’s made)
I don’t even really like the bedding in our master bedroom. Scott and I found it at WalMart on clearance years ago, and I added a few fun throw pillows to dress it up with the intention of buying a whole new set sooner than later. Welp, four years later, here we still are.
We are both in this stubborn phase of not wanting to change much about our master bedroom until we buy a house. So, for now, this is the bed I see that makes me happy when I walk into the room and it’s made.
(Complete with at least one sleepy kitty, of course.)
• coffee time with huge mugs
From the smell and taste to the complete and utter relaxation that comes along with drinking coffee, I am one hundred percent all about anything and everything having to do with it.
I could literally be falling asleep on the couch and if someone were to offer to make me a fresh cup of coffee (decaf included), I would perk up and be ready to rock. Also, the bigger coffee mug, the more comforting.
• restaurant leftovers
It doesn’t even have to be anything epic leftover in my refrigerator for me to get excited to see the next day.
Nine times out of ten, I will forget I have already prepared restaurant quality food waiting for me, so when I open the refrigerator it’s pretty exciting to find.
• hand written notes
As much as we have transitioned into a world of virtual notes and updates, I will always hold a special place in my heart for snail mail and hand written notes.
When Scott decorated the house in post-its for our one year anniversary, I was giddy.
• the cool down portion of any fitness class
After working hard and breaking a sweat, it’s so important to cool your body down with a stretch. I love, love, love when I take a group fitness class and the instructor spends at least five or so minutes stretching us out to a slow track in a dark room.
It’s almost like taking a five minute meditation and yoga class. So calming!
• when dresses have pockets
Because very rarely do I actually want to carry a purse when I go out.
Even if it’s cute.
Bonus points if it’s a romper, and double bonus points if it’s on sale.
• cornbread and chili
I could probably eat a version of chili every single day. Pair that with cornbread and I’m done.
Two years ago on Thanksgiving Day, that was our exact menu and I was super happy about it.
I could keep going with bullet point after bullet point of food, but I think that covers the serious obsessions.
So tell me, what is one thing you get embarrassingly excited over?
Amber Schumann
Ok, seriously… I fully agree and confirm every one of those. No shame!
Heather
Ha, glad to hear it! 🙂
Elsie @ Sharing Healthiness
Haha! I really enjoyed this post! Mail in any form is always exciting because it is a present to you! 🙂 I also get excited when I find a penny on the street, I really feel like my luck is going to be on point that day! I also get excited when the takeout delivery person rings my doorbell and when the first snow of the winter arrives…I feel like a kid again! 😉
Heather
Oh, those are all good ones! Especially the first snowfall. That really does make me giddy. Only if it’s heads up on the penny, right? 😉
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment
There really is something about getting mail even when you know what’s in the package! I always get really excited in spring when the flowers start to come up and it is late longer into the evening. If you start to think about it I have quite a list too.
Heather
I also love when the snow melts and I see the first signs of green! 😉
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries
I think we would get along really well, just sayin’. 😉 I think I was nodding my head to every single one of these. Cody laughs at me with how excited I get about stomping on a crunchy leaf. Don’t even get me started on how excited I get about a big cup of coffee. And yep, seeing and crawling into a made bed is one of the best things ever. I love the idea of turning out some of the lights during the cool down portion of fitness classes. My yoga classes have done this, but I should try it in a BodyPump class during cool downs too!
Heather
Ha, I love running in the fall for this exact reason! 😉
teddi
I love this post! I think one of the purposes – and the best parts – of life is to revel in the little things. Adore – and agree – with every single item on this list 🙂
Heather
I guess you’re right. Thanks for the reminder… it’s nice to sit back and enjoy the little things in life every now and then!
aladygoeswest
Hi Heather! I pretty much agree with all of these. And as a group fitness instructor, I love the cool-down too! It means, we made it! Oh and I get very excited about taking the tags of something new and wearing it.
Heather
That was my favorite part of barre classes when I taught. I always loved that time to recover and talk a little softer. <3
Catherine Cormier
I agree with your list and will add hitting all the green lights when you’re in a rush, noticing that something you need/want is on sale, getting home from work and hubby is already making supper, ice cream!!
Heather
Hitting all the green lights is the best! Although, it always seems to happen when I’m in no hurry whatsoever. And I also love surprise dinners AND all the ice cream 🙂
Amee
Apparently, I get really excited about other people’s mail. WHAT WAS IN THE BOX ?!!?
Heather
Ha, that’s great. It’s a new (amazing!) blender I won in a giveaway at IDEA! I’m so excited to put it to use!
Jen @ Pretty Little Grub
I am the exact same way when I get packages in the mail. There is nothing that makes me happier than mail. My husband always mocks me that I love checking the mail.
Heather
Ha, reminds me of the “Mail Time” song from Blues Clues! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1wUirNlR0U
Jess
Everything pumpkin!!! I can spend time in the candles aisle like no one’s business smelling pumpkin 😀
I get overlyexcited with new songs too…
My favorite is the hair: isn’t it soooo cool when you do nothing and it is absolutely ok? AWESOME!!
Real cards and sticky notes rock, just as receiving flowers at work 🙂
Heather
I went into B&BW with a friend and we were seriously smelling all of the autumn candles for like twenty minutes. #embarrassinglyexcited
taramdeal
You and I are on the same wave length for LOTS of things 🙂 Fall scented candles?! Count me in! I just told Brian this weekend that we NEEDED to go to Bath and Body Works for some fall scented stuff, and the sound of crunching leaves?! Love it!! 🙂
Heather
I’m happy I went, but my wallet isn’t. I could seriously buy everything in that store!
Bridget McGahen
I especially love jumping from leaf to leaf to hear the delightful crunch beneath my nikes!
Heather
I would be lying if I said I didn’t take certain “leaps” during my outdoor fall runs. Just to crunch a nice big one!
Nicole @ Squash on Squash
Dresses having pockets is SUCH a great feature! Sometimes you just get that “what do I do with my hands” feeling, and pockets just sort all that out! Also, I’ve found some cash in dress pockets once or twice, so thats always fun 🙂
Deanna
NOTHING better than clean sheets on a made bed. 🙂 heaven. 🙂
Heather
AHHH that is good! How could I forget this one?
Tanya
If you love corn bread and chili you need to make corn bread chili casserole – it’s like heaven! 🙂
Heather
That sounds DELISH. I definitely need to get on that. Thanks!
Janelle @WhollyHealthy
Are we the same person? I love mail, pumpkin everything, and dresses with pockets!
Heather
Ha, maybe so!
Anna-Marie @BeautyandtheBeets
I am happy someone else asked what as in the box, but more importantly…WHAT WAS IN THE DRYER????
Heather
Ha! Nothing exciting. Mostly Scott’s tees and athletic clothes!
Betty LIVIN
I am right there with you on the smell and taste of coffee! Makes me happy every time!
Heather
Coffee time = my happy place. <3
Adventure Culture
You are not alone! I think this is the kind of thing people enjoy reading at the end of the day when they’re winding down from mental strain of a work day (kind of like the guilty pleasure of reality tv- haha).
While packages are always exciting, my thing would probably be a new book or random puppies! I don’t have my own yet, so outdoor events or farmers markets where people freely bring their pooch melts my heart. <3
Leslie @ Life Begins at 30?
Yum…chicli and cornbread! Making me hungry for lunch!! I get excited when I get packages in the mail. I also get embarassingly excited when the fall season shows start.
Heather
I passed a couple of trees that had orange and yellow hues yesterday and got pretty pumped!
Sara @ Lake Shore Runner
When I get a letter (mail) or a package! The little things in life.
Because I am semi-new to the blogger world I also get excited when I get comments on posts or if someone tells me one of my posts helped them or interested them 🙂
Heather
I love that too! I almost added emails from readers, but didn’t want to be that cheesy. Ha. It’s so true though!
Sara @ Lake Shore Runner
Ha that is funny cause I contemplated putting it because I didn’t want it to seem like I was soliciting for comments, But I do enjoy them so I went with it. We both can be cheesy 🙂
Kaylin @ Enticing Healthy Eating
Haha! I needed this article today, Heather. It made me smile and remember all the things I also get embarrassingly excited for. I agree with you on the packages arriving at the door (even though I, too, know what’s going to be in them most of the time), handwritten notes, and cornbread and chili of course! I recently made pumpkin cornbread I found a recipe for over on Gina’s blog The Fitnessista. Go check it out for sure! It was incredible.
Linda @ Fit Fed and Happy
Are we the same people?
1. Fall is THE BEST SEASON EVER.
2. I like the messy hair look I get when sleeping on wet hair. It looks stylish and yet effortless.
3. I like the smell of clean laundry.
😉
