How I Deal With Litter Boxes In An Apartment (& $100 Visa Gift Card Giveaway)

One of the biggest worries I had when we decided to move to Brooklyn and into an apartment again was how the pets were going to handle close quarters. I was just as concerned with how we were going to be able to adjust to having a litter box out in the open, since we don’t have the square footage for a laundry/pet room like we’ve had in our last two homes.

For those of you who are newer to the blog, my husband and I are the crazy people who brought a dog and two cats with us to New York City. Yup. No kids, just three fur babies. We’re definitely in the minority to most in the area.

Aspen (our grey, sassy cat) and Cali (our calico cuddle bug) are sisters who came home under the Christmas tree back in 2009. We adopted Roadie almost a year later after we found him as a stray, and they have coexisted as our little Hesington wolf pack ever since. We’re a pretty close family, some might say.

Knowing our space was going to be tight, I came to terms with the fact that the litter box would most likely need to be in our living room. So we got night stands that would hide the litter boxes.

We’ve always enjoyed inviting people over, hosting dinner parties, and entertaining guests who come in town to visit us. Luckily, no one has really noticed that the night stands are, in fact, where our girls use the restroom!

I try my best to manage the litter box smell and aside from keeping it as clean as possible, the biggest thing I can do to minimize the odor that inevitably seeps out from a litter box is to invest in a quality, odor sealing litter.

  7. We almost always have candles lit, I love the fall scents! We also are lucky and can have the litter box in our basement, so we just clean it often and have air fresheners down there.

  9. In smellier spots, like near our diaper pail, I leave a little jar of baking soda mixed with lavender oil. The jars smell nice while also absorbing and trapping other smells. It’s a cheap little smell-hack 🙂 Candles are my other go-to!

  10. We use wallflowers from Bath and Body Works, candles, under the sink deoderizers, and for the cat, use a good quality litter, and empty the litter box multiple times a day into small deoderized bags made specifically for that purpose!

  11. I try to clean the litter box often to cut down on the smell and use a Febreeze wall plugin air freshener in the hallway that the litter box is in.

  12. I just make sure to be very dilligent about cleaning every week so that nothing ends up lingering! And a nice fall candle never helps 🙂

  16. When my home is in need of a scent pick me up, I like to do some baking 🙂 Beyond that, taking the trash out regularly and not letting stuff sit in the garbage disposal helps to keep odors down!

  18. I have allergies to a lot of fragrances/smells. I clean my house with a vinegar-based solution. It is a bit odd to get used to, but now it smells like clean to me.

  22. This is a problem I struggle with constantly with three cats (and two humans!) in a small apartment. I have found that a diffuser and essential oils works wonders — and you get to inject a little personality into your space by switching up the scents!

  24. Ohmygoodness, thank you for writing this post! I’ve been trying to convince my fiance that we need to get a cat – even if we do live in an apartment. And I know our apartment isn’t quite as small as yours (perks of not living in NY?) and that it is very doable! I love the idea of the Clump and Seal MicroGuard cat litter to mask odors. Always a challenge when in a small space with litter boxes. One of the things we do now to mask odors in our house is regularly use candles and make sure we vacuum twice a week.

    Now I’m on to showing this article to my fiance…;)

  26. I recently moved into my new home a few months ago , the old owners had a dog and must have kept In basement with the bathroom pads because the basement smelt like pet urine. It’s an unfinished basement and I tried everything to mask that smell. The febreeze wall sticks are by the basement door which helps with hiding the smell into the kitchen. I also used baking soda on the floor and let sit hoping it would soak it up. The worse is when it’s hot and humid out.

  28. We have the same ratio/// 2 cats, 1 dog, 0 real babies. 😉 We recently started brushing our dogs teeth to combat his bad breath. He hates it! I wish we would’ve started when he was a puppy.

  29. We keep baking soda in our Ubi. It catches most of the smelly diapers! Lol… A nice fall candle is always great too!

  31. I LOVE wallflowers from bath and body works! I live in a small condo. So, I, as-: well, appreciate quality cat litter–it goes a long way to mask odor in smaller spaces!

  36. I use the scented/odor-eliminating Glad trash bags! I also have a newborn and have quickly learned that the Diaper Genie is my best friend. I don’t smell ANYTHING until I have to change the bag!

  37. I take out the trash on a daily basis so it doesn’t start to smell in the kitchen if something extra stinky is put in there by me or my roommate.

  39. Lysol, Febreeze, candles, repeat. I have a cat, a child in diapers, and a pre-pubescent stepson. Lots of smells to cover!

  43. I’m a Bath and Body candle freak. Always have a couple going. We also have 2 indoor cats and a dog and the litter boxes are down cellar but I still can smell them sometimes. Will have to try that litter.

  44. After removing whatever caused the odor, I like to open a window or put baking soda on or near the odor. I don’t like perfumed products too much.

  47. I use candles, Febreze spray and Febreze plug in scent diffuser. They really make my house smell good! Plus for my cat, I use a good odor eliminating cat litter!

  57. Thank you so much for sharing this!! My husband and I really want to get a cat (okay, mostly me) and I’ve been struggling with the litterbox in the open idea as well. We mostly use candles, a scentsy, and febreze right now to cover most of our own human smells! 😉

  60. I have 3 cats and just try and keep their boxes very clean to help with smells. We keep liner bags in the box, but still disinfect and wash the boxes regularly, and we have 3 litter boxes. I haven’t tried this brand of litter but now I think I’ll try it out.

  80. I use a lot of candles not only to mask odors but because different scents really remind me of different things and get me in the holiday mood, or excitement for spring, fall, etc.!
