One of the biggest worries I had when we decided to move to Brooklyn and into an apartment again was how the pets were going to handle close quarters. I was just as concerned with how we were going to be able to adjust to having a litter box out in the open, since we don’t have the square footage for a laundry/pet room like we’ve had in our last two homes.
For those of you who are newer to the blog, my husband and I are the crazy people who brought a dog and two cats with us to New York City. Yup. No kids, just three fur babies. We’re definitely in the minority to most in the area.
Aspen (our grey, sassy cat) and Cali (our calico cuddle bug) are sisters who came home under the Christmas tree back in 2009. We adopted Roadie almost a year later after we found him as a stray, and they have coexisted as our little Hesington wolf pack ever since. We’re a pretty close family, some might say.
Knowing our space was going to be tight, I came to terms with the fact that the litter box would most likely need to be in our living room. So we got night stands that would hide the litter boxes.
We’ve always enjoyed inviting people over, hosting dinner parties, and entertaining guests who come in town to visit us. Luckily, no one has really noticed that the night stands are, in fact, where our girls use the restroom!
I try my best to manage the litter box smell and aside from keeping it as clean as possible, the biggest thing I can do to minimize the odor that inevitably seeps out from a litter box is to invest in a quality, odor sealing litter.
I recently got the opportunity to try out ARM & HAMMER™ Clump & Seal™ MicroGuard™ Cat Litter, and I was looking forward to putting it to the test. I won’t name any names, but someone is pretty picky about her cat litter. She has been known to protest by going outside of the box … so if she likes it, it must be a good one!
The heavy-duty odor eliminators paired with ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda destroys odors on contact immediately. The new MicroGuard™ technology works to prevent bacterial odors before they even begin! Not only does MicroGuard™ seal and destroy immediate odor, but it prevents the growth of future bacterial odor. This produces an odor control guarantee for 7 days. With a box being so close to where we sleep, I was concerned that dust would fly around when one of the cats went in and out of it. I’ve dealt with litters that give off a dust residue before, so I was really happy to find out that this one has an ultra-low dust factor and isn’t a problem.
MicroGuard™ Cat Litter is made with fine, micro-particles and is smaller than most I’ve used before. I will say that I love how easy it is to scoop, thanks to the CLUMP & SEAL™ formula. Anyone who changes a litter box on the regular will agree that crumbling scoops are the worst. When you can’t get a full clump out of the box, what’s left behind just mixes in with the rest of the litter. (Gross, right?) I haven’t had a clumping problem yet!
My favorite part about this litter is the scent. Some cats are finicky about scented litter compared to unscented, and I’ve always preferred to buy scented in an effort to seal odors.
ARM & HAMMER™ Clump & Seal™ MicroGuard™ Cat Litter gives off a pleasant aroma that is somewhere in-between. Overall, Aspen, Cali, and I give this litter two thumbs and four paws up!
