Good morning! Friday is here and the weekend is very much upon us.
While I don’t have any big plans coming up, I am looking forward to getting some projects done around the house and catching up on studying while Scott’s away at a men’s church retreat. I know. We’re wild.
This week brought me a lot of smiles! Just like every Friday, today we are talking favorites, and I encourage you to join in on the fun and share what made you smile this week. Friday Favorites #110: Week of 10/9
• my new part-time job
When a friend reached out to me and asked if I would be interested helping out in the daycare at our church, I was a little reluctant. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if the environment would be good or hard for me, considering how this year has gone for us on the baby front. After a lot of back-and-forth feelings and answers, I finally agreed to give it a try and showed up for my first three hour shift last Thursday morning.
I’ve worked the birth to 12 months room (twice) and the 2-year-old room, and I have been so incredibly happy to be there. Yes, it’s hard at times to see young mothers drop off their little ones, but overall, I have really enjoyed my time playing, singing, and interacting with the precious babies six hours a week.
Last Tuesday, one of the smaller ones in the two-year-old room actually fell asleep while I was holding and walking around with her. I sat down and rocked her for a good twenty minutes before her mom came to pick her up, and I could have held her all day long. She was so sweet. Baby and toddler cuddles are the best, aren’t they?
I’m only two weeks into it, but I’m truly thankful for this job to pop up in my life right now!
• Max & Erma’s
After my time at the nursery was over yesterday, Scott and I met a friend who’s in town visiting for lunch at Max & Erma’s. I’ve only been to the restaurant a couple of times, but I never realized the great deals they offer on a weekly basis.
Kids eat for free on Tuesdays, you can get two free cookies with your meal on Wednesdays, and they offer $5 cheeseburgers with endless fries on Thursdays. Taking advantage of the deal of the day (and cashing in a $10 off coupon – woot!) Scott and I shared the cheeseburger, fries, and the new spinach and grilled tomato salad.
I love trying a little bit of everything and balancing the grease out with some fresh greens.
Max & Erma’s are only located in ten states, and if you’re close enough to try one, you should. They have a make your own sundae bar (!!) and those cookies I mentioned above come warm with a glass of milk. Just sayin’.
• HB mug/glass beer stein (from Germany)
A close friend of mine brought this HB mug home for me from Germany many years ago.
For those of you who don’t know, my middle name is Betty. Very rarely was I referred to as “Heather” in high school and college. Instead, I was always “Heather Betty”, “HB”, or even “Betty” to most of my friends and teammates.
I adore this mug and have been constantly filling it up with water to drink around the house lately. I know it was designed for beer (it’s actually a ), but it’s great and easy to hold and carry around with the handle.
Do any of you have this same mug? I’m sure I’m not the only one!
• Who Said It? game tutorial
I first mentioned the Who Said It? game in my recap of Alex’s Bridal Shower earlier this week. I included a description on how to play and where I got the materials from, but figured it might be helpful to show you how I made the cut outs.
I started with drawing a lip and a bowtie on a sheet of paper, cutting that out, then tracing each on several pieces of textured paper. (I found the glittery and patent leather paper set in the Halloween section of a craft store!)
I carefully cut around the shapes and laid all of them out on the floor.
Using a glue gun, I attached a skinny popsicle stick to each shape.
It took a few hours to do a set of forty-five, but it was a fun project to work on while catching up on some of my favorite recorded shows.
The mason jars, tweed ribbon, and textured paper were purchased from Michaels and the long popsicle sticks were from Jo-Ann Fabrics.
See my post on the bridal shower for the question template and more ideas!
• Thin Mints chewy granola bars
Longtime readers already know that I have a slight obsession with anything chocolate and mint. It’s not very easy for me to stay away from anything officially labeled Girl Scouts Thin Mints, and I was eager to try these Chewy granola bars Scott picked up for me.
Let’s just say they didn’t last very long in our pantry. The Thin Mint flavor was undeniable, and it was a treat I looked forward to snacking on any day I brought one to work. Yum!
• long cotton-ish leggings
It’s also no secret that I’m a fan of leggings… (hello blog title), and this week I have been digging cotton leggings that are long enough for me to pull over my socks. I picked up from JCPenny last weekend, and I can’t stop wearing them.
These are a mixture of cotton, spandex, and polyester, and are super comfortable for workouts or bumming around the house. I have a general rule to wear longer tops that go down to my mid-quad with leggings that aren’t terribly dark and thick, but these are actually a lot thicker than they look in the picture.
More on the Xersion workout line coming soon!

• Friday funnies
I thought it would be appropriate to theme this batch around leggings, thanks to a chuckle I had (and shared) on Instagram this week.
The #leggingsarepants hashtag entertained me for quite some time…
Those Ryan Gosling memes are so great!
Your Turn
Have a great weekend!

Susie @ SuzLyfe
you are like 87000x more productive on your “off” weekends than I am. Ever. I am seriously the most boring person ever. I run, eat, veg, and repeat. Wave of the hands. All of my yoga pants are the extra long ones. They are they best! Have a great, relaxing weekend!

Haha, don’t be fooled… I usually have an obscene amount of Netflix movies, shows, and documentaries playing in the background of whatever I’m doing on the weekends! 😉 Happy Weekend Susie!
Alexandra @ My Urban Family
That job sounds like so much fun. Some days I really miss when my job was being a part time nanny for a few different families. I can totally understand how it can be difficult though. Good for you for trying to see the positives in it first. Happy Friday!

I was a nanny in college and I have to admit that it was my favorite job yet! My sister works full-time as a nanny for a few families in Florida and there are definitely days that go by where I wonder why I don’t do it too. Nannies are needed and appreciated more than you’d think!
Ellen @ My Uncommon Everyday
I always make sure to eat at Max & Erma’s when I’m home! I love it. Their chicken tortilla soup is perfect on a chilly day, and I’ve never been able to make chocolate chip cookies quite like theirs. I’m hoping for a productive weekend with some baking thrown in 🙂 Have a great one, Heather!

Yes, their chicken tortilla soup is bomb. I almost ordered it yesterday, but we had plenty of food. Have fun baking this weekend!
Kelly @ Kelly Runs For Food
Haha I laughed so hard at those leggings pics. I’ve always been in the “leggings are NOT pants” group, but the colder it gets I slowly start to rethink my stance.
Congrats on your new job. I volunteered at a day care in college and loved hanging out with all the little ones.

Right?? Haha, they’re all completely accurate. And the Ryan Gosling memes always get me. Legging paired with winter boots, oversized sweaters, and coats is legitimately my winter uniform!
Morgan @ Morgan Manages Mommyhood
I’m glad you’re enjoying your new part time job! Also those lips and bow ties came out so cute!

Ashley @ A Lady Goes West
Hi Heather! I think your new job was probably introduced to you for a reason in life, so I’m glad you took it and are enjoying it. 🙂 And those long leggings? Yes, please. And thin mint granola bars? Another YES, please. Good favorites today, my dear. Here’s to a less-than-exciting weekend! 🙂

Haha, I’ll be thinking of you as we both slave away at the computer. Most likely in leggings… eating Thin Mint granola bars. 😉 Happy Friday!
Courtney {Alkeks Abroad}
I’m so jealous of the thin mint chewie bars. I’m going to need someone to mail them to Australia asap. I love long leggings! Luckily they are super popular here.

We might have the Chewy bars, but you’ve got the amazing weather! I dream about visiting Australia some day. 😉
Ange @ Cowgirl Runs
I was going to say the exact same thing as Ashley about your new job – great minds, right?! 🙂
I’m flying in/out of Detriot for work in a few weeks (working in Toledo) and I’ll have to see if there’s a Max & Erma’s nearby.

Thanks Ange! Oh fun… I’m not sure what’s around Toledo but I think it’s a little over an hour from Detroit? Wish you were more in the Metro Detroit area to see some of my favorites stops!

I love me some leggings! Although lately I’ve been living in my Lululemon Sattva pants. So comfy and perfect as the weather cools down a bit 🙂
Heather
Yay, I’m excited for you that the weather is starting to cool down. I hope you have a great weekend Giselle!
Hollie
Love your faves this week! I tried really hard to sprint over to JCPenny to grab those leggings before I had to grab C from preschool pickup but I just didn’t make it, but I will be grabbing them…. soon! Have a great weekend.

Hi Hollie! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂 From what I remember, they are having a great sale this weekend for Columbus Day. I hope you find some good deals!
Brie @ Lean, Clean, & Brie
I used to work at a daycare and I loved when a baby would fall asleep on me while I was rocking the baby. It was always so soothing and peaceful to watch the baby sleep! Hope your new job continues to go well. I am sure it was brought into your life at just the right time 🙂

Yess! baby and toddler cuddles are the best! So great you’re working at the daycare! I think that’s great. It gets you out the house. I miss babysitting! I used to do it all the time. Children are really a delight–even if they’re not your own–it’s still such a nice feeling to interact with them and care for them.
And yes to cotton leggings! I have a few pairs of the cotton roll-down wonder-unders from lulu and just love them! They’re so comfy! Have a great weekend girl!
Oh–and those Quaker chewy bars!–I would not trust myself around those. At All. In high school I used to down like 2 boxes at one time of the peanut-butter chocolate-chip ones–they are so damn addicting.
Heather
Babysitting was always a favorite job of mine. It’s nice that it’s come full circle. 😉 I’ve never tried the peanut butter chocolate chip flavor, but they sound delicious!
My Beauty Dreams
Those leggings look so comfy! And it would be so nice to work at a day care like that — it’s so cute how that little boy feel asleep in your arms! <3

So relieved that I’m not the only one with a billion pairs of black leggings. (And yet i never feel like I have enough of them…) And I am all about the leggings over heels–I’ve definitely started doing it more since I started working at the barre studio. I have one pair of black leggings that aren’t long enough to go over my heels and they’re definitely not my favorites.
I’m glad working with the kiddos is working out for you! I can’t imagine what it must be like to be constantly reminded of something you’re struggling with so much. Glad to hear you’re doing well with the situation and that you’re loving working with the little ones.
Hope you have a great weekend! 🙂

Haha, no I’m definitely guilty. I finally went through my legging collection and passed half of it on to friends and my mom. They don’t mind some of the blog swag from time to time. 😉 Working with the babies is great, but I also have a struggle from time to time. It’s normal. At the end of the day, they make me smile so I’ll continue to do it as long as I can!
Sheena @ Paws and Pavement
Love the memes! Never too much coffee that is for sure! Glad the daycare job is working for you. My mom actually had a daycare in our house for almost all of my life (while living at home). Other people’s children can be just as important. We are still friends with many of the families and know those kids are having kids. They grow up so fast!

It’s amazing how close you can get with the little ones and their families over an extended time of taking care of them! My sister used a daycare in the home of a wonderful sitter, and it was her favorite spot to drop the kiddos. They thought of her as family!

I run an in home daycare in our home. I don’t have kids. It is a very rewarding, and challenging job. I hope you enjoy it!
I don’t comment much, but I love your blog!

I don’t wear leggings to train at the gym, but I do wear them about 90% of the time I’m not there. 😉 Can’t help it!
