Good morning! I hope you all had a great weekend.
Nothing too crazy happened over in our neck of the woods, but it was our first holiday weekend in New York City. While most people took advantage of the long weekend and got out of town, we stayed put and busy around the apartment.
Here are some of the highlights!
Saturday
I spent most of Saturday organizing our room and the living room. I feel like I’ve been saying that for a month … but really, that’s how long it’s taking. When you work with a small living space, you have to get creative and make a place for every little thing, usually without cabinets or storage to hide things behind.
I’m not being dramatic y’all, just real.
So, with that said, the best part of the day had to be taking a run round Prospect Park with Roadie and my friend, Katlyn. It was super crowded and filled with more people barbecuing in one spot than I had ever seen before!
Needless to say, we were ready to get back to a calm environment and hung around drinking green smoothies while watching Bridesmaids after that. Turn up!
Sunday
Scott and I have been enjoying visiting different churches in different areas throughout the city ever since we moved. We decided to attend a 12:30 service at Hillsong in Times Square on Sunday, and we were both looking forward to it.
It was a simple walk to the train and ride over to the city! Some of you might remember us attending a service at Hillsong before we moved, while we were visiting last February. That was our first time going to a Hillsong service, and it was located in Union Square. We were excited to visit the “bigger” campus, and we were very impressed by the surroundings and service.
It was a beautiful theater!
Since we went to a later service, we didn’t get out until the early afternoon. We took our time wandering back home and made a few casual stops as we went back to the subway.
It’s still so strange (in the best way) that we live right around the corner from all of these places now.
Just over thirty minutes later, we were back in Brooklyn and made the tail-end of our local Sunday Farmer’s Market in Park Slope. If you’re ever in the area, it takes place on 4th Street and 5th Avenue from 10:00 a.m. – 5 p.m.
It isn’t a huge selection of tents, but there are some great ones, including Doctor Pickle. His stuff is fantastic, and we left with two big containers of pickles and banana peppers! It’s always good to support local farmers.
After looking and sampling some food, we remembered that we hadn’t really eaten yet and decided to try a new-to-us Mexican spot right by the house.
Haab is a fun little spot with in or outdoor seating. They have great margaritas, and we made sure to order off of the specials menu for dinner.
Scott and I actually split a chicken dinner and ordered tacos on the side that we never got to. I’m looking forward to heating them up for lunch today! One thing I might skip next time, however, is the guacamole. It’s good, but not really worth the $9 price tag.
Monday
It was pretty quiet around our neighborhood on Memorial Day.
Scott and I enjoyed sleeping in and then took Roadie around the neighborhood for a long morning walk. We stopped into a local diner for breakfast to-go, and ate it as soon as we got back.
Later on, our neighbors and friends, Hillary and Shawn, invited us over for dinner. I was in charge of bringing the salad, and she made a wonderful barbecue dinner right from the kitchen.
You have to get creative when you don’t have access to a grill! I’ve been using the crock pot to cook barbecue chicken for years, but it was the first time I had heard about cooking corn on the cobb in the oven or toaster oven. Simply leave them in the husks, set your oven to 350 degrees, and bake for 30 minutes! I loved that.
After we went back upstairs, Scott got a craving for something sweet. He took Roadie for a walk and brought home the best cheesecake I’ve ever tasted. Seriously.
Before we even moved here, we heard great things about Junior’s! We found out that our local market sells their cheesecakes, and that they are always open. This may not be the best situation, you guys. The raspberry swirl was missing crust, but you didn’t even notice with the bottom layer of cake! Yes, cake. It was delicious.
And with extremely full bellies, we called it a weekend!

Questions of the Day
• What was one highlight from your weekend?
• Are you a fan of cheesecake?
It’s so funny to me … I used to hate cheesecake.
Growing up, my brother loved it so much that he requested cheesecake for his birthday each year. My mom would have to buy an additional cupcake for me because I never liked it. I finally decided to give it a real try somewhere in my early twenties, and now I’m obsessed. If you’re ever close to a Junior’s in New York, please go get a slice. Yum!

We started cooking our corn in the oven too (oh apartment living) and it is SO easy! Looks like a really wonderful weekend 🙂

Cheesecake is hands down my favourite dessert. Seems I need to make a trip to Brooklyn for this epic cheesecake.

Junior’s is one of those foods that screams New York like no other. Glad you enjoyed your “staycation” long weekend!
So Dave and I have lived on the same block as delicious dessert places for EVER, until our current place. (Even in Orlando, we lived in the Solaire, right about Mochi.) And I will tell you, YES, you WILL increase your dessert intake. Enjoy it! You won’t live there forever. hahahah!
