Last night, Scott and I joined some friends for dinner at MEX in Bloomfield Hills. We had been wanting to try this spot for a while, and I’m so glad we finally got around to doing it!
From the eats to the atmosphere, I absolutely loved everything about this place. The decorations were especially unique and very swanky!
We heard to always expect a long wait to sit for dinner, so Scott called ahead of time and made reservations for four. We arrived fifteen minutes early and had no problems getting seated right then and there.
As we made our way to our table, we all kept pointing out the details of the decorations and became eager to see the entire place.
To me, it all felt extremely eclectic with details straight from the movie Alice in Wonderland. I especially loved the mix and match bench cushions, wall painting on tin cans, mirrors on the ceiling, framed and lit windows on the wall exposing the kitchen, and these fancy silver chairs made for a queen.
I mean, I would come back just to be able to sit in that chair on my birthday, wouldn’t you?
It didn’t take long for the girls to notice the Skinny Menu, which of course included skinny margaritas. My friend Alex and I both ordered one and an appetizer of (regular) chips, guacamole and salsas for the table to split.
I wasn’t terribly hungry, so I originally ordered the skinny version of the Shrimp Civeche, which left off the tortilla strips and added cucumbers.
Unfortunaltey for me, they were out of that menu item for the night, so I improvised and ordered the Chicken Taquito Lettuce Wraps instead.
They were great, but I ended up filling up on the appetizers and only ate two of them. I wanted to save some room for dessert, so I asked for a doggie bag and had plenty to do while everyone else finished their meals.
I’m not sure if she was being nice or secretly evil, but our server mentioned and ever so graciously brought over bottles from the hot sauce bar to sample.
The boys went at it and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t the least bit entertained by the red faces, noisy exhales and swollen lips.
Seriously. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen such a long lasting effect! They were struggling! I guess it was only to be expected with names like these…
And yes, that is most definitely a shot of plain milk to help cool the heat.
After a good amount of hoot and hollering, the boys finally got most of their meals down (after drizzling more than plenty of hot sauce) and we took a look at the desserts. Fried ice cream with four spoons for the win!
It was everything I could have ever asked for in a fried ice cream with honey, caramel, pineapple, coconut, and corn flakes on top. So dreamy!
I was still considerably full from dinner and snacks I engorged in before we even left (whoops), so I only had a few spoonfuls and they were all like little bites of heaven.
As we wrapped things up and got our bills, the hot sauces were staring and lets just say my curiosity got the best of me.
I stuck the smallest part of corner of a fork in one of them and put the tiniest drop of sauce on the tip of my tongue. Within seconds, my mouth was on fire and I couldn’t believe the boys ate their meals with full drizzles of multiple sauces on them. Crazies!
(Those are our “I’m breathing fire” faces, in case you couldn’t figure it out.)
On our way out the door, Alex and I wandered upstairs and talked about how cool this place would be to host a private party at.
There is an inside/outside feel with every table location and we both couldn’t get enough of modern and arty decorations. Scott and I want to somehow duplicate this ropes and lightbulb wire light fixture!
The top picture was our view of it from our table and the bottom left picture was the view from upstairs. Cool right?
And how about that giant wooden spoon and entryway of a door? I asked Scott to stand next to it to show just how ginormous it was. If you look closely enough, you can see the actual door at the bottom left corner.
I felt like I needed to dedicate an entire post to this spot since there were so many fun pictures to share. We all raved about the menu and experience the entire time we were there.
Thanks for a great start to the weekend, MEX!
Question of the Day
• What is a cool new-to-you restaurant you’ve visited recently in your area?

I little while back I went to Gurus in Provo, Utah and I really liked it 🙂
I’ve never made it out to Utah, I’d love to someday!
