Calling all local readers in the Detroit area: this post is for you…
I hope you enjoy reading about my experience while visiting this salon, and make sure to catch the bottom of this post to enter to win a valuable gift card to apply towards salon and spa services for YOU!
I was recently given an opportunity to go check out a brand-new salon and spa in Downtown Birmingham, Michigan!
Salon Legato is privately owned and carries the full line of Aveda retail products. They only use Aveda in their hair colors, design, and spa services.
After exploring their website and learning more about what Aveda stands for, I was thrilled to take them up on the offer to experience a variety of their services. After spending several hours (and two separate trips) at the salon, I could tell a big difference in what makes an Aveda salon.
The products, services, and mission is centered around the body and mind’s well-being. All products are naturally derived from the Aveda company itself, and the company is focused on caring for individuals and the Earth.
Due to schedule conflicts, I made two separate appointments, one for a hair cut and color and the other for a 90-minute self renewal facial.
Considering it had been nearly a year since I had my hair cut or colored (after dancing, dyeing, and constantly styling it for six years, I wanted to give it a full break!), I was a mix of emotions from eager to nervous to walk into a brand-new salon for hair services.
I knew it was a gamble, but for whatever reason, I was confident in knowing the result would turn out great.
After a chaotic morning of workouts and working the nursery at church, it was a nice break in my day to make the twenty minute drive over for a few hours of me time. The salon is very easy to find, and is located right on the main street of Downtown Birmingham (Maple Road).
I noticed the calming aromas as soon as I walked in, and I was enthusiastically greeted by the co-owner of the salon, Karlyn. She welcomed me to the salon and offered me a beverage while I looked around. (Oh my goodness, the Aveda herbal hot teas are so good!)
(Pampering and gossip magazines go hand-in-hand, no?)
My hair stylist for the day, Katy, did such a great job. She could tell that I was a little uneasy about cutting my hair, and she ensured me that I wouldn’t walk out with anything I didn’t ask for. So, naturally, I put my brave girl pants on and asked for something dramatic. Ha!
I had been trying to grow my hair out for over a year, but it was at a breaking point. No matter how many supplements I took or treatments I tried, it literally wouldn’t grow any longer after a certain point. Frustrated and sick of looking at the sever split ends my almost year hiatus from a cut developed, I got the inspiration to go for a lob (a long bob) via Pinterest and ran with it. Why not, right?
I have clip-in extensions that I like to wear from time to time, so I brought them in for her to match my color. They’re pretty close to my natural hue, and my overall goal these days is to have minimal upkeep.
Katy was awesome. We chatted about everything from personal training to our favorite restaurants to eat in the area, and she made me feel comfortable about what she was doing the entire time. She explained that the Salon Legato experience involves more than just the services you go in for, and gave me a hand, arm, and scalp massage (later at the shampoo table) using essential oils from the Aveda line.
As I was getting a treatment after my shampoo, I casually mentioned that I needed to get my eyebrows shaped, and she went up to the front to see if I could get them done while my treatment was setting.
Ten minutes later, my hair was ready to be cut and my brows were back to normal! I was impressed at how accommodating she and the Legato team was with my subtle mention of needing a service.
After the cut, Katy asked if I wanted my hair to be styled straight or curly. I asked for a loose wave to see what the style could really do!
Within an hour and thirty minutes, I was in and out with a new hairstyle!
Knowing I wanted to snap a few photos, Katy asked if I wanted the “finishing touch” they offer to anyone after any service. She had me sit in a makeup chair and applied powder, blush, and lip gloss (all Aveda products) for me. I loved that!
It took me a good week to get used to my shorter hair, but I can honestly say that I love it now. It takes a third of the time to style than it used to, and it looks cute pulled back in a ponytail for once. (It’s the little things.)
Exactly one week later, I returned to the salon for a much anticipated facial. I can’t remember the last time I treated myself to one, so I was really looking forward to another afternoon of pampering, compliments of Salon Legato.
I arrived a few minutes early, so I sipped on another hot tea while I chatted with Karlyn and briefly waited to be taken back to the spa services room. I was scheduled for a 90-minute self renewal facial with Becca, and she was wonderful.
She had me change into a robe and sit with my feet in a tub filled with warm water and stones while we had a short consultation. She explained that the salon has a mission to truly help clients unwind and dive into the entire experience of “getting away” for duration of time they are there. She asked me a series of questions about my skin, my current skincare routine, and where my trouble areas are, then washed my feet.
(I loved having this extra time to relax and finish my tea!)
I laid on the table and can’t recall the last time I felt that relaxed. In fact, I think I actually fell asleep towards the end while she was giving a stress relieving hand, foot, and scalp massage.
Becca let me pick out my aromatherapy and oil scents (I chose lavender), and explained what she was doing with each step, as well as how it would help my skin. She was very informative, not overly talkative, and threw in a plant peel that would normally come with an additional up-charge.
Like I mentioned above, I’m almost positive that I fell asleep towards the end, which never happens. I have been getting regular massages for years, and I have only fallen asleep once. Ever. I left my hour and a half session at the spa feeling completely rejuvenated!
Now onto the good stuff…

I love Aveda spas!! It really is an experience that I haven’t gotten at non-Aveda spas. There is one across the street from where I work and I go there once a month for a massage … I’m pretty lucky because massages are covered under my work benefits so I get to have a spa experience without paying anything out of pocket 🙂
Love your new haircut! The most dramatic haircut I’ve ever had was cutting my shoulder-length hair into a pixie cut a few years ago. I was super nervous leading up to my appointment but it turned out so well 🙂
Enjoy your day!!

Love your hair cut! I am getting my hair done next week and thinking about a lob – I don’t know if I have the courage to do it (my hair is pretty long now), but I LOVE yours!
The salon sounds awesome, I know I love Aveda products. I use their shampoo and conditioner, and have purchased their teas in the past.

I have always wanted to visit an Aveda salon! I would go and get my hair done… I’m a Borics kind of girl since hair cuts are normally spontaneous decisions for me. I’d love to be able to go to a salon!
Agata
Love the new hair, especially the loose waves! I’m in major need of a haircut, and I’ve been on the fence about going ombre so this could be the chance to do it.
Brie @ Lean, Clean, & Brie
I would definitely take advantage of the spa services 🙂

Your hair looks amazing and all of those services sound so wonderful! I have never had a facial or a massage but whenever I go in for a pedicure those always end up on my mind. I was actually thinking last night that I should schedule a facial and a massage during the holiday season to give myself a little pamper and relaxation during such a busy time of year.

Id use it for hair color or a facial. That place does look relaxing!
Allison
Love the new hair! I would adore a warm massage… It’s going to get COLD here before we know it! Side note, I absolutely love that Aveda tea!

It’s been way too long since my last facial. I’ve had the lob for about 18 months now and love it, but I’d gotten into the habit of home coloring and really did a number on the texture of my hair. Lesson learned, about a year ago I made an appointment at a new to me salon and ended up taking about 3 inches off my lob and have since been gotten color every 5 weeks (have to cover my greys) and have been slowly growing my lob back out. I’m about ready to change things up again though. Maybe some additional layers or just a color change? Since I have t odye anyways, I may as well have fun with it.
I love love Aveda and the experience.
Ashley
Love your new hair! Do you happen to know the name of the nail polish in the picture with the tea? Love that color!
Heather
Thanks Ashley! Oh man, I think that’s the one I found at Target (for under $3!) after loving a similar OPI manicure color. The brand is Sinful Colors and the shade is Aubergine! http://bit.ly/1N9LFME 🙂
Ashley
Thank you! 🙂 What a bargain!

I would get a facial to help my face glow for upcoming holiday parties!

I would definitely get a facial!
Krystal // The Krystal Diaries
Love your new hairstyle! Last year I chopped my hair off and went with a short inverted bob. I’ve kept it like that for a little more than a year now. I’m starting to miss my long hair though so I’m going to start letting it grow out. I’ve been dying my hair for so long I don’t even remember what my natural hair color looks like so I think I’ll stop dying it for a while too.

Hi Jamie! I hope you get some much needed time in the salon! If you don’t end up winning the giveaway, you should hint towards the hubby for a day for YOU as a holiday gift 😉

Hi Heather,
Good to know that you enjoyed the visit to this saloon and your hairs are looking gorgeous. I don’t like coloring my hair a lot and I think I had last colored them about two months ago.
I hope you won’t mind me commenting on this post. I have noticed that most of your readers are girls/women.
