As most of you can imagine, it has been a little bit of an adjustment from living in Orlando, Florida to Rochester Hills, Michigan. Scott and I are doing very well, and are really enjoying the new chapter we started in our lives together.
There are a handful of things we get to experience up here that we would never be able to down South. Snowfalls, an office in the basement, and a completely different wardrobe are are just a few of them.
As much as we like the new environment, there are things we certainly miss about Florida. The warm weather is an obvious one. Palm trees and sunshine are next for me, followed by Publix. Yes, the grocery store, Publix. Meijer and Kroger are great, but are just not the same.
Apples are great here! Fresh and crisp. Citrus is… good, but not great. You can imagine my excitement when Scott brought a little Florida Sunshine into the kitchen Monday morning!
A long time reader sent me a box full of fresh, wonderful, fantastic smelling oranges straight from her farm! Parksdale Farm Market is located in Plant City, Floria, which is just about an hour outside of Orlando.
The market was founded in 1956, and is the largest family-operated strawberry and citrus market in Florida. Scott and I have always wanted to make a trip over to Plant City for their Annual Strawberry Festival, but never got the chance.
Known for their world-famous strawberry shortcake, thousands of people visit their market each year. All of their produce is hand-picked and delivered fresh from the grove.
As soon as I opened the box, the smell of fresh citrus took over the kitchen and even lured in a furry fan.
Seeing the copious amount of fresh fruit on the counter sparked a well-rounded breakfast of scrambled egg whites with peppers, and Jennie-O turkey bacon.
Fished off with a sunburst tangerine!
It was juicy, tangy, and had the thick Florida peel I am used to.
After lunch, I went to work on the computer and wondered what the navel oranges tasted like. They looked so appealing all lined up in rows, it was hard to just sit there and not think about them.
I went up to get one and enjoyed it right at the computer. To my surprise, there was not a huge mess to clean up, like I usually expect when eating an orange.
The tangerines were great, but navels are always a favorite. So juicy and fresh!
