Some of you might have picked up on a little teaser at the end of this morning’s post. That was intentional… I’ve got some great news to share!
Since getting my certification in personal training through NASM, I have been on the hunt for a job (or jobs) in the fitness industry. I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go or what exactly I wanted to be doing, but I knew I felt the most at home in front of a class and/or working in small group training environments.
I was open to the idea of working one-on-one with clients, but I wasn’t quite confident enough in my experience to look for jobs in personal training just yet. After searching and talking to management at gyms both big and small, I have come to realize that maybe a smaller, intimate setting is what suits me best.
I recently got an offer to train clients at a personal training facility. At first, I wasn’t sure personal training is what I was looking for, but after sitting on it for a couple of weeks, I have realized that it’s absolutely perfect for me.
My main drive to work in the fitness industry is to help others get active and achieve their goals. I love the environment and mission of this facility, and the ownership is completely on board to train me to teach small group, semi-private training, and one-on-one personal training.
I have the option to teach other types of classes like barre, spinning, or Zumba at other facilities, and I also have the opportunity to develop into web-based coaching and online personal training! I’ll still have enough time to check in with you all on the blog and work from home as well.
(Stay posted, as I could potentially offer my training services to you guys!)
I’m really excited to begin working with clients, and will be ready to do so in just a few weeks. I started training and filling out paperwork this morning!
Starting a Personal Training Wardrobe
While I was getting dressed this morning, I realized that ninety percent of my workout attire is leggings and bright colored. I love each and every piece I have acquired over the years, but I was in a bit of a pickle trying to pick out what to wear to my first day at the gym.
Neon party leggings and a tight pink zip-up don’t exactly scream “personal trainer”… ya know? As soon as I left the gym this afternoon, I was on a mission to start my new black and grey professional fitness wardrobe.
I made my first stop at Target, hoping to find some staples in the line. I was pumped to find the lightweight puffer vest (the same one I shared last month) to throw over my shirts too!
, C9 Duo Dry Max Semi-Fitted top,
(FYI: the C9 woven pant is currently buy one get one 60% off online!)
I was hoping to run into some extended holiday weekend sales, and that is exactly what I found at Old Navy. They’ve got a great active line!
&and 2 for $10 mesh athletic socks
(By the way, Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic is offering 40% off online orders today using the promo code CYBER!)
My next stop was at Tropical smoothie for an Island Green smoothie. This time I requested them to leave out the added sugar.
(Thanks for the suggestion, Rachel!)
Needing at least a couple pairs of pants (not leggings) for the weeks ahead, I stopped at Marshalls next. I found a great pair of Reebok pants and a Nike Dri Fit long sleeve shirt at a steal.
I think I’m off to a great start and now feel comfortable walking into the rest of my training days this week.
Lunch
As soon as I got home, I put together a salad using the rest of our turkey leftovers. Even after the green smoothie, my body was craving veggies!
Spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, veggie noodles, black olives, carrots, feta cheese & turkey topped in black pepper and drizzled in balsamic vinegar.
All right. Now I’m off to finish a couple projects and catch up on some blog work before my small group study tonight.
See you in the morning with (an attempt at) a fun fashion post!

Thank you! I know what you mean. When we moved up to MI, I really missed teaching barre classes at my studio. I’m hoping to be able to get back to the barre at least once a week!

Pretty Little Grub
Congrats on the job, sounds amazing! I never thought about wearing more professional workout gear but it make sense. All my stuff is bright right now too. I love the Old Navy Line. Such great stuff for crazy cheap prices!
Heather
Thank you! I used to wear whatever to teach group fitness classes, and I still would today, but for personal training clients, I think black and grey look the most professional. Plus, the gym I am working at requires it! So there’s that… 😉
Amy
Wow, congrats! I love that your new management was so open to training you to teach all sizes of client groups! I’m currently studying for my NASM certification, and I’m hoping that once I’m certified, I can find a similarly awesome company to work with. 🙂
Also, shopping for new fitness clothes is one of my absolute favorite activities! Ha!
Heather
Thanks Amy! Yes, I feel very fortunate. I’m excited to see where the next few months take me! Good luck studying for your CPT! Please don’t hesitate if you have any questions about the test or process. 🙂

Awesome news! Congrats, Heather! And yes, you’ll see that most trainers are in nothing but black. I save my bright colors for teaching classes. 🙂 Yay for you!
Heather

Brie @ Lean, Clean, & Brie
Congratulations on your new job! I am excited to hear all about your experiences. I never would have thought you would need more “professional” workout clothes, but it definitely makes sense! I would have to do some shopping as well! And I loooove the island green smoothie without the sugar, it’s pretty much the only thing I order at Tropical Smoothie. So tasty!
Heather
Thank you Brie! I’m sure I’ll keep you guys updated on how everything is going. I haven’t really branched out to try other smoothies at Tropical Smoothie either. No need, the Island Green is where it’s at! 😉
Lake Shore Runner

I love that puffer vest! I’ve been looking for a white one and got excited when I saw the one from Target comes in white. Turns out it’s sold out. 🙁
Congrats on your new job! You’re going to do great!
Heather
Yeah, I picked up the last one in any color in my size with this purchase. I like that it’s super lightweight, so I can wear it inside the gym comfortably. I’ve been looking for it for weeks! You just have to keep your eyes peeled 🙂 And thank you!
Chelsea @ Raw N' Toned
Congrats on the job!! You’re going to do amazing girl! I’ve been doing the same thing {building my Personal Training clothes collection } since I will be starting my Certification Training at the end of this month!
Heather

Congrats Heather! Looking forward to reading about your personal training adventures. I never considered that you’d have to wear the more “professional” black and gray. Love everything you bought.
Heather
It’s actually a requirement at the gym I am working at. But I think it’s a great look!
NutriFitMama
