Ridiculously Easy DIY Fall Wreath

Things are starting to look (and smell) very autumnesque around here. (I might have just made up a word, but we’re just going to roll with it.)

With the cool weather coming in quickly, I got the urge to get into the fall spirit this week and even made a bucket list of things to do this season!

One of the first things I wanted to get into was a fall inspired craft. While I appreciate crafting and enjoy pinning my heart out for ideas I might someday get to, rarely do I take the initiative to invest the time, energy, and money to follow through with one.

This, my friends, is probably the easiest DIY project I have ever done which we will get to it in just a minute!

Right now I want to share some other things that have me loving the fall even more. First up are these cinnamon scented pine cones topped with a mix of modern autumn inspired potpourri, both purchased from Jo-Ann’s.

The bag of pine cones was only $5 and smelled just like a cinnamon broom. I decided to put most of them in our downstairs guest bathroom, since it is central to the main level living areas.

I split the bag of potpourri between the two vases was excited to receive 20% off  my entire purchase by using a coupon sent to my phone via text message. If you aren’t a part of the JoAnn2Go club, I highly recommend you get on that train… before your next visit.

My next stop was to Meijer where I just so happened to find the best fall candles (on sale) and these adorable napkins while picking up groceries.

My last and final effort to bring fall into our home was to simply pull out this red cloth napkin I believe I purchased from HomeGoods a few years ago.

The orange and green napkins are up year-round (besides Christmas) and were purchased from Crate & Barrel three years ago.

Nothing crazy, but just enough to get me excited to transition into the holiday season which will be here before we all know it!

Ridiculously Easy DIY Fall Wreath Tutorial

I have seen tons of DIY fall wreath pictures floating around Pinterest lately, and while they are nice to look at, I am more likely to take pieces of different things (or in this case, wreaths) I like and make up my own version! That’s exactly what happened here.

Supplies

Avoiding the need to use a glue gun, I stuck to the basics and asked a Jo-Ann’s employee if I could use anything else to attach flowers to a wreath. I was thinking of some kind of brown string, but became intrigued when she suggested using pipe cleaners!

I didn’t tell her my intentions were also to attach a letter this way, and decided to wing it and use a version of super glue to attach the pipe cleaners to the letter, and then tie it around just like the flowers. I might be the laziest crafter ever, but it worked like a charm!

My supplies: 3 silk flowers of choice (these were some kind of fall hydrangea – on sale!), scissors or wire cutters if you have them, a pre-assembled wreath (not even going to attempt going down that road), a painted wooden initial letter, a package of brown pipe cleaners, super glue, and a spool of wired ribbon.

The first thing I wanted to do was attach the pipe cleaners to the letter to allow plenty of drying time. Where you place them will depend on your letter shape, but for the “H” it seemed best to bend them into a football goal shape and glue them horizontally down the middle.

I ended up doing three for more support and squeezed out wayyy more glue than I needed. Typical.

*Tip: When handling super glue, be very cautious of skin touching it at any time. Instead of using bare fingers, grab a cloth of some sort to push the pipe cleaners down and clean up glue drops.

While the letter is drying, cut down the flower stems and push them directly through the wreath.

Push a pipe cleaner through the flower and wrap it around back towards you. Pull it tight and wrap it around the stem. Trim the ends of the flower stems down as much as you can.

By now, your letter should be ready to attach. Decide where you want it, push the wreath up against it and bring all of the pipe cleaner pieces towards you. Try to pull and attach pieces diagonally, rather than straight across, to give more support. Pull tight and wrap all around together until it feels sturdy.

Hang on a wreath hanger on your front door and Voila!

I guess you could throw one more step into it from the beginning by painting the letter, but keeping it white didn’t bother me.

You can decide to keep it simple or even throw on a bow. Here, I simply cut enough wire trimmed ribbon to make a long bow and tied it around the end of the hanger.

I liked it like that, but wanted to try tying the ribbon up a little higher for a different look. That one was my favorite and is what the front of our door currently looks like!

Like I mentioned earlier, I love the idea of crafts. I find myself getting idea crazy when I scroll through Pinterest, but rarely even pin crafts anymore because I know I will most likely never get around to doing any of them! But, I do have to admit that once I make the effort to go to the store, get what I need, open some windows, light a candle, and put on some music it can be very therapeutic.
