The last two weeks have been nothing short of a whirlwind!
We’ve had family in town for ten days and then traveled to North Carolina and back, and the best part of it all was getting to celebrate our baby boy turning one!

First of all, I can’t believe that I just typed that. Our precious baby Skyler turned the big O-N-E on March 15th and is now officially a toddler! It’s insane, right?
Second, it was so, so fun to celebrate our little man. We weren’t sure that we were going to have a party for him, but since Scott’s mom, sister, brother-in-law, and nieces were in town, we wanted to take advantage of them being present for such a big milestone in our lives!

Scott has had a crazy travel schedule this month, and since he hasn’t been home on the weekends, we decided to throw a last-minute birthday party. We strategically scheduled it before guest hosting our regular church dinner party group on a Wednesday night. I never thought that we’d be inviting people over to watch Skyler smash a cake mid-week right before his bedtime (hello, cranky baby) … but hey, that option was what we had to work with so we rolled with it!

I knew exactly what theme I wanted to decorate with as soon as we decided to have a birthday party for Skyler. He’s extremely sweet, and is also starting to show a very wild side at times! Pair that with his middle name – King – and we thought a Where The Wild Things Are: Wild ONE birthday party theme was perfect.
We didn’t go too extreme on purchasing things for the party, but ordered enough to make it special just for our little king. I kept it easy and ordered everything on Amazon including this Wild One Banner Black Confetti Balloons Kit and Highchair Banner ($14 for all!).

I also found this adorable 1st Birthday Photo Banner that showcased his monthly photos, and I got the idea to display all of the extra photos that I had printed out throughout the last several months in the living room.

(I hate that he’s so far away from our families, so I try to periodically send them photo updates with new photos that I don’t post online.)

It was awesome to look back on how much he’s changed in just a short amount of time and relive the moments we captured all over again. I loved seeing his face so much that I left the photos up for the next week or so, too! My mom and aunt came

Not pictured is a set of gold glitter plates & plasticware, cups and napkins. We didn’t need anywhere near what I ordered, but I wanted to keep the extras for future hosting opportunities, holidays, dinner parties, etc. I just really liked the look of them!
We kept food for the party extremely simple since we had a full-on spaghetti themed dinner party following the festivities. We had a few appetizers, mini cupcakes, cookies, and an extra large smash cupcake for Skyler from a local bakery called Buttermilk Bakeshop.

He did well with the smash cake! He wasn’t sure at first, but he was all about it once he realized that what he was trying tasted delicious. He wouldn’t even finish chewing before he stuck more and more in his mouth! His cheeks got so big and I had to actually help him get some of the cake out for him to chew properly!
The kid loves desserts, what can I say?

We invited our friends who live in New York City, family in town, and the majority of the guest list came from our church’s dinner party. It was fun to get to host the group at our apartment and we were touched that a good amount of them came early to celebrate Skyler.
Sky did considerably well with the party held right before his bath and bedtime! I was proud of him. I thought that he might get overwhelmed with the decorations, people, and attention, but he hung with the best of ’em. We could tell that he had enough by about 8 p.m., so I gave him a quick bath, put him in his pajamas, and rocked him to sleep shortly after. He had a long, tiring day!

Looking back on this day makes me smile so big. I know that hosting the first birthday is mostly for the family versus the actual birthday boy or girl, but I’m so glad we have these memories and photos to turn back to.
We love you more than we ever thought we could, Skyler King!

Happiest of Birthdays to you, Wild One!
