The Meeting House + Rockin’ Rods Car Show in Rochester

Hello! I hope you all had a great weekend.

My newsfeed has been filled with first day of school photos! Did your little ones start today? Summer sure did fly!

Since our weekend was heavy with Pistons events Friday and Saturday, I am just going to start this recap with Sunday.

After the late church service (hello sleep!), Scott and I decided to have an impromptu afternoon date in Downtown Rochester. We hadn’t gone on a date in a while, so it was long overdue.

The Meeting House

The last time we passed by this area, I notice a neat and trendy looking restaurant called The Meeting House. I was excited when I went on Yelp and read fabulous reviews!

I loved the look and feel of the inside that expanded into an upstairs and a bright back room.

We didn’t arrive until just before 2 p.m., so surely brunch was out of the question… or so we thought. I had read that the brunch menu is great, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the brunch menu and specials on the chalkboard as soon as we sat down.

As our server took us through the menu, she mentioned that the head chef is one of the owners of the restaurant. They have only been open for about a year and a half and take pride in offering something different with unique meal options. Everything looked enticing, so we both had a hard time deciding what to get.

Scott went for sweet with his order of peach cobbler french toast (!!!) and a side of cheese grits.

I went for spicy with my order of the avocado scramble with sriracha and an English muffin on the side.

Ahh! Everything was so, so good. We were too full for it this time, but word on the street is they also serve homemade ice cream. We will definitely be back soon to explore more of the menu!

Rockin’ Rods in Rochester

On our walk over to the restaurant, we saw a classic hot rod car show in the distance and wanted to check it out. On our way back to our car, we hit the start of it.

As most of you probably already know, Detroit is also named Motor City for it’s history in automobiles. Not only are the major American manufacturer headquarters located around us, but Detroit has been long recognized as the historic heart of the automotive industry.

Last year, I was happy to work the Woodward Dream Cruise, but I will be missing it this year since I will be in California. I’m so glad we stumbled upon a preview right here Downtown!

For one full day, the Rockin’ Rods in Rochester serves as a warm up to the Dream Cruise. There are a variety of classics, muscle cars, hot rods and totally customized trucks, vans, and vehicles.

Scott and I realized that both of our fathers would absolutely love coming to this show! I couldn’t believe how old some of the cars were. This one was from the 1930s and even had the leather straps to hold the engine down!

Or how about this 1926 Ford Pickup painted in all black with neon wheels? It’s for sale, ya’ll.

As we made our way down the aisles, there were vintage cars everywhere. It was all so cool to see!

I might have even found a classic version of the Jeep Wrangler I have dreaming about. This Dodge was an actual war vehicle complete with posts to hold weapons in the back, so I might have to pass this time.

It was neat to go around and see the before photos and after (in person) condition of the automobiles. That is something you don’t get to do at the Dream Cruise! I also loved reading about the inspiration behind fixing up the cars, and who helped the owner along the way.

Cool points definitely went to this guy for the Back to the Future time travel car inspired design.

And also the inside of this 1970’s van that was designed to entertain and kept up by the original owner!

Towards the end of the show, we kept seeing hot rods parked on some of the side streets. I think my dad would love this 1923 Thunderbird!

And Scott’s dad would for sure get a kick out of this Ford Bronco. He’s been working on restoring Broncos for as long as Scott can remember!

The oldest vehicle we saw was this 1903 Oldsmobile. 1903! You might not be able to tell in this picture, but there is a horn attached to a long metal handle that serves as the steering wheel and wooden tires.

And the most interesting award has to go to this fully customized 1948 Ford Station Wagon. They called it “Woody” because every single panel has been customized and changed to wood.

The car doors and inside details were impressive enough…

… but then we looked up and saw the wood paneling on the ceiling! What?

It just goes to show how creative people can get with their car restorations. It’s an art if you ask me!

We finished up our time at the show and I left with a ton of pictures. I tried to narrow it down and only shared my favorite highlights. If you are someone who enjoys these types of car shows, I highly recommend getting to the Dream Cruise next weekend!

I will be missing it, but Scott will be there.

On our way back to our car, we found a sign of upcoming events in Downtown Rochester.

I’m sure we will be at more events to share, and I am highly intrigued by what will happen on “Talk Like A Pirate Day”. Ha!
