Good morning! How was the weekend? Are you just as stuffed as I am (still) from Thanksgiving leftovers?
We had a great weekend. My mother left for home Saturday afternoon, so I tried to make the most of our time together while she was still here. I treated her to a post-race massage Friday morning and then we spent the remainder of the afternoon checking out things to see in our area.
Close to sunset, we drove over to Downtown Rochester, and I was so happy to see the lights come on! Aren’t they pretty?
It hadn’t really snowed the entire time she was here, and like it was planned, snow fell hard as soon as the lights came on. It was so cool! We didn’t have any plans, so I took her to one of our favorite dessert and coffee houses: The Dessert Oasis.
I ordered Scott’s favorite, The Dharma Bomb.
We skipped the dessert, but I found all the happiness I needed in this giant cup of tea, steamed milk, honey and cinnamon.
With just a little bit of time to window shop, we walked up and down Main Street and found the best dessert of all!
How cool is this Frozen display? All three characters and the tree are made out of cake! It was really impressive.
And just like that, on our walk back to the car… we were in a snow storm! Michigan is so funny.
We went home for me to change and went straight back out to the Pistons game with a some friends. It’s been fun having my mom to keep me company at the games!
We joined Nichole and her family after the game for dinner.
It was so nice to catch up with them!
We spent our Saturday morning home and started it off with pineapple-glazed carrot cupcakes Scott made for Thanksgiving.
He made a cake instead, and we figured out they tasted more like an indulgent morning muffin. He followed this recipe straight from Health.
I spent a good amount of time going over some stretches and foam rolling exercises with my mom to help her with her tight IT band. She is running a half marathon this weekend and I told her it’s important to recover and stay stretched out now more than ever.
We packed up her things and headed out of the house for lunch before I had to drop her off at the airport. We took her to one of our favorites, also in Downtown Rochester, The Meeting House.
I ordered the soup of the day (cream of tomato), and the fall salad with chicken. My mom ordered something similar and a side of their zucchini fries. Don’t they look delicious?
They were. And then we finished the meal off by splitting a scoop of their homemade cranberry pecan ice cream. Everything was so good!
We were sad to see Scott go off to an event, but I took her through a couple of areas I like to visit on the way out to the airport. The week she was here went by so fast!
I got a chance to catch up on a couple of projects and, well, life Sunday. It was nice. I started putting up the Christmas tree, but decided to wait to finish it when Scott returned home.
It had warmed up to the 60s, so I took advantage of it with a run outside with Roadie. We both thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors sans snow.
We met a group of friends after the Pistons game and then SURPRISE found out my best friend Alex got engaged!
We stopped by her place to celebrate with a toast and got home late after a night of happy tears. We are so excited for them!
Congratulations Alex & Alex!!

Those lights are SOO gorgeous! And that Frozen cake…I can’t even imagine the hours of work. Love all the holiday things you got up to.
Heather
I should have taken a close up and detailed photo of the cakes. They were on point, “Let It Go” playing in the background and all!
Kate @KateMovingForward
Oh my goodness Rochester is so adorable!! I want to go there! I need to figure out the best neighborhoods here to look at lights.
Heather
Downtown Rochester is the first spot Scott took me when I arrived up here! I knew I could survive with little areas like this to frequent 😉
Lizzie S.
I love that your mom does half marathons! Also, Scott bakes?!
Heather
Yes! Scott is a way better baker than I am. He doesn’t have much time to cook, but when he does it’s always good! I guess I’m a lucky girl 😉

The weekend flew by! We got our Christmas tree and decorated so that was the highlight. The lights in Rochester look beautiful. Have a good Monday!
Heather
Plugging in the Christmas tree for the first time after it’s decorated might be the best thing ever. <3

Looks like you had a great time with your mom! I love when towns do the lights like that. They do it in Royal Oak too. My favorite part of the weekend was being home in Detroit!
Heather
Yes, I drove her through Royal Oak and thought the lights looked so pretty! Glad you were able to spend the holidays with your fam here!

90s night? So jealous. I was just watching the video for 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins today and found it so very inspiring fashion-wise. I need to bust out the button front baby doll dresses, sports wear and combat boots. Okay I think my stream of consciousness has taken over.

Those lights! So pretty and festive! Haha, nothing like DC 😛 I wish we were more FUN like that!
Heather
I bet DC has some fun things too! I’d love to re-visit. I haven’t been since middle school!

Looks like such a fun weekend. I am obsessed with this time of year when all the little towns are decorated with lights and look so cute!
Heather
Me too! It’s my favorite right time right now. BEFORE the freezing temps set in 😉

Love the picture you posted right after you said you took your Mom to the airport. The last time my mom visited. I wore my running clothes to the airport, and as soon as I got back home I ran and ran. Running in my therapy. The downtown area is so cute with the lights like that. I have never actually seen a downtown like that, just in movies. http://www.eatallovertheworld.weebly.com
Heather
Aw, I bet it’s so hard for you to say goodbye to family living across the world! Running truly is therapy for me too. <3
