Hi friends! At the moment, I am getting ready to head to the Orlando airport and will be back in Detroit by lunchtime. Like most of my trips home lately, this one was a lot of fun and way too short.

This morning, I wanted to share something kind of fun slash embarrassing with you, and it involves accents. You know, the funny and different ways we all pronounce the same words.
Do you think you have an accent? I have a feeling that your answer is no. You never have the accent… it’s everyone else who has them, right?
As a native Floridian born and raised in Orlando, I always thought I had a “normal” accent. If I ever got questioned about it, I would carefully listen to people speak in movies and on television shows, and validated my opinion when I thought the majority of them talked similarly.
After traveling the country a bit, I have learned that I become easily influenced by what I hear around me. If I am ever in the same place for a considerable amount of time, I start to pick up the sayings and twain that surround me and inevitably come home with a new (and mostly temporary) type of “influenced” accent until it works it’s way back to normal.
The problem, however, is that I now live somewhere completely different.
I noticed an extreme Michigander/Mid-West accent when I moved up here, but constantly become the one getting called out for saying things “differently”. When I come home to visit friends and family in Florida, I now get the same reaction and continue to get ragged on, just in the opposite way.
Over the past year and a half, I have without question acquired something different. It is Southern with a hint of Northern? Northern with a hint of Southern? Whenever I get asked where I’m from I love to ask people to guess and think it’s hilarious. Really… what the heck has it turned in to?
Here is where you guys come in! Can you help me figure it out and give it a label? Because if you keep asking me I’m just going to keep saying “I don’t know… normal?” as an answer.

Well that was interesting. I totally forgot about “tennis shoes” and still have no clue what kind of spider I should be talking about.
And don’t even get me started on Scott’s accent. It is one hundred percent Southern, and find it hilarious when we play the say this word, now that word game. Maybe I can make things really interesting around here and have him record the same video. Ha. I can hear the Southern drawl on “fire” and “oil” already!

Skyler did great walking into KINDERGARTEN with a big smile on his face this morning. I, however, was a bit of a mess on our walk home. 🥹
It’s wild how fast these 5 years with him have gone … 7 since we moved to NYC and into our apartment, dreaming of the day our kids would someday go to the *awesome* school right down our block. 🏫

Haha I took an online quiz a few months ago about accents and according to it I have a Louisville accent…which is weird considering I’ve grown up in Miami and have never been to Louisville lol

I do t think you sound southern at all! I have a friend for. The Sarasota area, and she sounds extremely southern, so this was funny to hear. I was expecting a he southern drawl, and got….kinda northern!
I know exactly how you feel! I was born and raised in Canada, now living in Texas for the past 5 years…. I get made fun of like crazy! Whether I’m north or south. I didn’t start picking up y’all until this past year, but the Texas is coming in strong now!
I think this is really funny! I am from Indiana and still live here, but my fiancé moved to South Dakota and whenever I visit them, everyone says I have a major accent, but my fiancé doesn’t anymore! I think everyone there talks like they’re from Canada for sure, or maybe Minnesoooota haha PS- I think you sound a little northern, but not much different than Indiana 🙂
I think you would quality as a “normal” or midwestern accent. I’m from Missouri and I I say a lot of things the same way. You definitely don’t have a southern accent and I wouldn’t really say you have a northern one either.
I have a dear friend who is from Tennessee and when it’s raining when the sun is out they say that the devil is beating his wife….so weird.

I am SO doing this. It made me laugh just reading the questions. When I first moved from Idaho to California, my nickname forever was “Idaho” because I had an accent.. Let’s see if I really do- I’m so making this video. Awesome.

Haha I’m from Erie, PA and I’m so guilty of the “both” issue. It wasn’t until college that I was told that there is no “L” in the word like I was pronouncing it haha. I was in Virginia for a short time and everyone knew right away that I wasn’t from the south!
