Hi friends! How’s your Monday treating you so far?
This weekend flew right by for us. Scott and I attended a leadership gathering at church on Friday night as well as Saturday morning. I taught a 8 a.m. class at the gym on Saturday, attended the meeting at church with Scott, then went home for a couple of hours to finally relax before a big day out on Woodward Avenue!
2015 Woodward Dream Cruise
Once a year, Woodward Avenue attracts tens of thousands of custom and collector cars, including street cars, vintage trucks, and muscle cars for the Woodward Dream Cruise.
During the week of the cruise, the suburban portion of Woodward (from Ferndale to Pontiac) is transformed into a parade route and allows anyone to join in the stroll to showcase their rides.
Fun fact, Woodward (M-1) is also the first concrete highway in America!
The Woodward Dream Cruise started in 1995 and is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, now hosting up to 1.5 million visitors and over 40,000 antique and classic cars the big Saturday event!
Scott already had plans for Saturday afternoon, so I joined our friend Alex and her fiancé, Alex’s, family at a private Dream Cruise party on Woodward. We arrived right before 4 p.m. and spent some time walking the streets before we found our spot.
I’ve never claimed to know much of anything about cars, and even so, they were all so cool to see. My favorites are always the vintage hot rods from the 50s and 60s!
There was an impressive display of old and new vehicles, most of which were fully customized and restored.
From Model T’s to Bugattis, there wasn’t much you didn’t see lining and cruising down Woodward Avenue and the surrounding streets!
I drove to the event with the Alexes so Scott could meet us there later on. Thanks to Alex’s family, we had free entry into a private party that hosted us with plenty of entertainment for the day including complimentary food, drinks (including wine and Starbucks!), music, and front row seats to see the cruise.
We took advantage of all that was offered, and had no problem digging into a variety of snacks from food trucks.
The best part might have been the free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Just sayin’.
Living in Motor City sure has it’s perks. It’s amazing to hear that people travel all over the globe just for this event when it is right in our backyards!
We made our rounds around the event area, sat and watched the variety of cars pass by, took a couple of strolls down Woodward, and walked around Birmingham for the next five or so hours.
It was great to spend the day with close friends and family, all the while being able to soak in a true Detroit tradition. Thank you so much for having us!
As you can imagine (due to the endless snacking and unlimited trips made to the food trucks) we weren’t terribly hungry once everything shut down by 9 p.m. The four of us said our goodbyes to Alex’s family and charged on to find something to do nearby.
Alex suggested popping into Triple Nickel, a new American-style restaurant and bar in Birmingham. We weren’t looking to get dinner, but thought it would be good to check it out for drinks and appetizers.
There was a Woodward Dream Cruise party happening on the rooftop (with an entry charge), so we asked for a spot upstairs on the other side. We found a table near open windows, and it was nice to sit and enjoy an evening on what felt like a rooftop.
We all ordered off of the specialty drinks menu (the mojitos were delicious!) and split a couple of appetizers including a burrata & tomato salad.
I also had to try the sweet potato fries. They were good, but would have been a lot better with a little more crisp.
We caught the tail end of the Tigers vs. Astros game on television and chatted until we were all ready to head back home. It was a long, but awesome day with friends!
Thanks for stopping by, and I’ll see you back in the morning. I’m off to Birmingham again to get fitted for a bridesmaid dress (fingers crossed the store is open this time), then over to work before bible study later tonight. Happy Monday!
