Hi, hello and Happy Friday! How are you doing out there?
It’s been a minute since I’ve checked in outside of Friday Favorites, and I’ll be sure to update you on some things that have taken my focus elsewhere when the time is right. Until then, I appreciate you clicking over to read the latest round-up, and I invite you to follow Life In Leggings on Instagram for daily stories and content!
The last week was filled with ups and downs as I was solo parenting. Scott surprised his dad by flying home to celebrate his 70th birthday, and I know he had a great time and that they appreciated his trip. He returned home a few days ago and has been keeping busy with his business, work and gigs ever since! (I haven’t really seen him much, which is definitely a change from a year ago mid-pandemic.) He was scheduled to travel again tomorrow, but the event he got hired for got cancelled. The silver lining is that he’ll now be home with us for some much needed family time here in New York.
Also! Yesterday was our wedding anniversary, and I am really looking forward to our date night coming up tonight to celebrate! It’s been far too long since Scott and I have had quality time together, just the two of us.
Here are some other things that have made me smile lately …
FRIDAY FAVORITES: WEEK OF 7/23
- Industry City is back!
I may or may not have posted about Industry City on the blog before, but the lack of previous posts with that search phrase in them leads me to believe that I haven’t. If this is the case, then I have dropped the ball on sharing a really cool place that you need to visit if you’re ever in the Brooklyn borough.
Industry City is a huge, industrial complex in Sunset Park, Brooklyn along the waterfront. The views are bright and colorful, and totally “Brooklyn” in my opinion. Here, you’ll find restaurants, shops, food trucks, boutiques, markets, events and plenty of space to walk around and even entertain the kiddos. Everything was shut down for a while, but things are opening again and there is weekly live music and events to attend again!
Scott and I have taken Skyler a few times recently, and he just loves it. They have a stage area with rocks and trucks for kids to play with along with a mini golf course where anyone can sign out a club and play for however long they want. The options for local food and beverages seem endless, just plan to eat early as most places close by 8 p.m. (At least for now?)
It’s free to access, and there is a lot to explore in the multiple warehouse buildings. Oh, and the photo backgrounds are amazing! This is where I shot content pics for the blog and social pages earlier this year. I am clearly a big fan!
- *NEW* Total Body Dumbbell Strength Workout
I wanted to share a new workout with you that I created at the gym this week. I had the free weights room to myself, but I stuck to the bench with a few sets of dumbbells to be able move quickly and get on my way.
You’ll need a pair of medium and medium-heavy dumbbells for this workout and a bench to support you on the presses, pullovers, split squats and concentrated curls. If you don’t have a bench, you could substitute a stability ball or a couch to support you. You could also choose to move to the floor for the exercises on your back.
Complete all exercises in Circuit One 12-15 reps each for 3 rounds. Then, move on to Circuit Two 12-15 reps each for 3 rounds.
Please listen to your body and rest in between exercises and when needed. And if you need help with modifications, please ask!
EXERCISE DEMOS
single arm dumbbell chest presses (loaded)
dumbbell renegade rows (modification: dumbbell rows)
v-sits on bench (or floor)
concentrated dumbbell biceps curls
dumbbell Bulgarian split squats
Let me know if you give it a try!
Disclaimer: If you’re new to strength training, please make sure that you’re cleared by a doctor before you try this. Modify when needed, take breaks when your body needs them and reach out with any questions!
- Puppetworks
Something else that got me really excited to see re-opening is Puppetworks right here in our neighborhood of Park Slope, Brooklyn. It’s something that I’ve been eyeing for years and never got a chance to visit before the pandemic closed almost everything in 2020.
I’m so happy to see that they made it through and to the other side! This little community theater was founded in 1980 and hosts puppet-show versions of classic stories and fairy tales. It’s a not-for-profit organization, and ticket prices are very reasonable.
They are currently presenting The Wizard of Oz, and Skyler and I went to see the show last week. It was better than I anticipated and proved to be entertaining for both children and adults! It was very well done, and the inside space is adorable and lined with all of the puppets that aren’t currently in use. Skyler loved that!
We will be back upon the next showing and recommend it to anyone looking for something new, cool (and inside with A/C!), with the little ones. The experience gets five stars from me!
- Summer staple right now – The Jellies
One of my go-to clean beauty holiday sets every year is The Jellies lip glosses! They’re so cute and have become my favorite set to break up to strategically place in different bags as well as gift to others. Once you try them, you totally get it. One swipe on your lips gives you a beautifully tinted shine with a tasty flavor!
The Jellies Duos are now here for good, and they are the perfect lip companion for the summer. They’re small enough to throw in any bag, purse or even your back pocket and are really fun and functional. They don’t offer a ton of color, but each one provides enough of a shade that is noticeable and a step up from clear. (If you’re looking for bolder options, I would recommend Beyond Gloss, which is just as great.)
The Jellies remind me of my childhood in the best way (hello, Juicy Tubes!), but are the cleaner upgrade. Plus, they last forever. What’s your favorite color combo?
