Hi friends! I hope you are all having a great week so far.
It’s been an interesting one here in Jersey City. As most of you know, we are temporarily staying at a friend’s house (so grateful for them!) while we are waiting to officially move into our new apartment in Brooklyn this weekend!
(Have no idea what I’m talking about? Catch up with the latest NYC updates.)
Scott spent the day in the city yesterday, so I used my free day to catch up on some back-end blog related projects, job search, and film a video to share with you guys.
It has been ages since I shared a vlog here, so I figured this was as good of a time as ever to ramble about life updates on camera. You’re welcome.
On the one hand, it’s crazy to think that we were buzzing around trying to finish packing all of our stuff into a fifteen foot truck just a week ago. On the other hand, time is flying. I’m not sure what the next couple of months will look like for us, but I thought it would be fun to document my thoughts and experiences of this New York adventure along the way.
So without further ado, here are my updates.
Check out my NY Living and New York City Pinterest boards that I mention in the video.
I hope you enjoy it!
Questions of the Day
• Have you ever made a big move across the country or world?
• Is there anything (affordable) we need to do in the Jersey City/Hoboken area before we set out for New York?
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables
I’m so excited for you guys!! A big change is so exciting (even if it’s also sort of scary!) you guys are going to rock this 🙂 Good luck!!
Heather
Thanks Liz! It is scary for sure, but equally as exciting!
Cara
Ahh I was so excited to see you were in my hood (Hoboken 😉 You should definitely hit up Bwe for coffee, Devotion Yoga for a yoga class (your first class is free!), La Isla for cuban sandwiches (they were featured on the food network!), and Grimaldis for pizza. Athleta on Washington St. hosts free athletic classes on Saturday mornings (just stop in to register). I’m not a big beer person but it’s fun to spend an afternoon at the biergarten on 14th street (they have great German hot pretzels) especially when its warm enough to sit outside. Once it gets a little nicer you have to come back to enjoy Pier 13 (they set up a biergarten on the uptown pier with food trucks).
Brooklyn is fun but definitely come back to enjoy Hoboken in the summer. Good luck! NYC can be overwhelming and make you feel like you’re being pulled in 10000 directions. But it has an energy and sense of opportunity you can’t find anywhere else. (And I could be biased because my parents are New Yorkers and I grew up in NJ but people in NYC are pretty nice- just always on the go and to the point haha) I know it’s been a whirlwind for you and Scott but I think you have some wonderful adventures ahead <3
Heather
Good to know about the coffee and yoga! I have been frequenting Modcup because it’s super close to us in Jersey City. We are absolutely loving the NYC energy. Can’t wait to get settled! Thanks for the suggestions 🙂
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment
I moved from the East Coast to Austin two years ago. It is still a pretty vivid memory. The packing, the road trip. But in the end it is worth it. Good luck. xo Lauren

I’ve heard great things about Austin! We were considering TX for a while, too. Love it!

I moved from Michigan to Hawaii right after I graduated from college. I moved out there to house sit but didn’t have a job lined up. I ended up working as a tour guide on the Battleship Missouri (which was sort of related to my BA in HIstory…). I loved it but it was hard being all alone and so far from my family and friends. I’m so glad I did it because I learned a TON about myself and life.
Best of luck to you guys! Looking forward to hearing about all of your new adventures!

Wow, Hawaii! That sounds amazing! Scott has always said that being a tour guide seems fun. Thanks for reading!

You are super brave! And, if this is crazy, it’s the GOOD kind. Fresh start, new adventures — keep trusting your instincts! You’re going to be GREAT! God has a plan for you, and you are living it. Blessings to you.
Heather
Haha, thanks! I guess we are! I appreciate the support <3

My husband and I moved to a France from the U.S. on a temporary assignment a few years ago. Neither of us spoke the language, we could not bring most of our belongings, and we ended up living in an apartment about half the size of our condo back in the U.S but it was one of the best things I have ever done.
New York is one of my favorite cities to visit and I’ve really enjoyed exploring Brooklyn neighborhoods the last few times we visited. I’m so excited for you to have this adventure and look forward to reading more about your experiences.
On a side note, we were car-free for a while and had a Zipcar membership that we used on the rare occasions where having access to a car for a few hours would make life easier.
Heather
Wow, it sounds like France was quite the experience! Thank you for following and for the Zip-car suggestion. We just activated a membership yesterday!
Tanya
Love love love! Can’t wait to see how this unfolds! So excited for you guys! You’ll be just fine without a car.. The one bathroom may take a minute to get used to.. Haha!
Heather
Haha, right? I convinced Scott that we need a vanity to help with bathroom traffic. We’ll be okay … eventually 😉

I went to college in NYC, and even though I HATE the cold (I live in DC right now and complain about the cold weather every day) I think NYC cold is a different, much more tolerable kind of cold. I walked a mile to and from school every day, all winter long and I was never phased by the weather. I think all the concrete keeps it insulated or something?
Heather
I totally agree. It seems cold, but not a harsh cold like I’ve experienced in Michigan. Who knows!
Dara
Welcome to the east coast. My son and I used your half marathon training program. We competed in the north face endurance challenge in DC last week. Thanks for a great training program.
Heather
Thanks Dara! I’m so glad you found it helpful. Congrats on your challenge – that’s awesome!
Leslee @ Her Happy Balance
Congrats on all the big moves you’re making! I’m a Philly girl but recently found out I’ll be moving further north to the Connecticut area. I’m a little stressed about finding an apartment but just trying to know that it iwll all fall into place. You’re going to love your new home. Living in NY will give you accessibility to all the great NE cities – Boston, Philly, DC – they’re only a drive or train ride away!
Heather
Thanks Leslee! Congrats on your move to Philly – that’s a neat area and not to far from NYC!
Sam @ Barrister's Beet
Loved the video! I second the comment that NYC cold is much different than MI cold. And our summers are much hotter : ) So excited to see you guys get settled.

Heather
Thank you! Both France and Canada sound fun – I’m surprised to hear you like Canada better!
