Hello there! How was the weekend?
By now I’m sure you’re already well into the new week, so lets get right to what went on in our neck of the woods over the past couple of days.
But first… I just have to share that Jock Jams Radio is truly pumping me up right now. We had it playing at an event over the weekend, and I never realized what awesome 90s throwbacks showed up on it.
My last two favorite tracks were Rhythm Is A Dancer by Pulse and Move This by Technotronic. Play one of them and tell me it doesn’t take you right back to roller skating rinks in high school. It’s a great start to the work day!
Anyways, here’s our weekend summed up as best as I know how. I learned a lot over the course of the last few days including:
• I consume way too many cheat meals.
• I skip my weekend runs way too often.
• I apparently have a love affair with hard cider and chocolate.
As a healthy living blogger and enthusiast, I am all about allowing yourself to enjoy whatever you want at an appropriate time and amount, but I seem to have lost all grasp of what that is lately. Ever since the NBA season ended in April, I have been going all out on the weekends, and have nothing but Monday morning regret to show for it.
Slowly but surely, I hope to ween myself off of the expected weekend crap food and get a much needed healthy balance back. Just for kicks, lets recap the junk that happened over the weekend anyways.
Friday
I spent most of Friday running errands, studying, and organizing the house. Considering we weren’t home for the rest of the weekend and it turned into a complete mess again, it was at least comforting to know our home was put together for at least a solid day out of the three.
We had plans for a low-key evening with a small group of friends. I knew pizza would be served for dinner, so I attempted to throw in some veggies by bringing a salad.
Two slices of Whole Foods pizza and a side salad came next, alongside a tall glass of raspberry cider from a winery trip up north. Not too shabby.
Throughout the night and several rounds of Cards Against Humanity, those two pieces turned into four, followed by two more glasses of cider and a huge bowl of ice cream. #fail
Saturday
I feel like I barely made it out of Saturday alive because it was so crazy!
In true summer fashion, I put on my enthusiastic HOOPER‘s assistant hat and had the pleasure of corralling him through three separate events in one day. We had an early call time of 7:30 a.m. and kicked the day off by causing a ruckus at the Older Person’s Commission 5K starting line.
We continued right on to Downtown Detroit for the Motor City Hoops Classic on the Riverfront.
HOOPER and the Flight Crew put on two great dunk shows, and were even featured in The Detroit News! I posted a sneak peek of one of their shows on Instagram because I was so proud of them.
We were there for the 3-on-3 tournament, and our group kept the crowd entertained with dance contests and shenanigans in-between dunk shows.
D-Town, the Piston’s Hip Hop Dance Team tore it up by improving and formed teams with audience members to battle each other.
It was really impressive!
After baking out in the sun for a couple of hours, we packed up our truck and headed onto the last event of the day, a Celebrity Softball Game with the Detroit Lions players in Dearborn.
The game was hosted by Lion’s player Steven Tulloch to raise money for his foundation, Operation 55.
It was cool to see all of the players on a different field, and HOOPER took every opportunity to make himself seen. Big shocker.
It was a full day of chasing a nutcase, that’s for sure!
On our way back to the arena, we stopped at Qdoba for fuel, since it was the first real meal our group had time for the entire day.
We started off with their trio of dips (queso, guacamole, and mango mojo) and chips plate topped in some kind of sweet mango drizzle.
It was fantastical. But not as amazing as this Chicken Fajita bowl.
White cilantro and lime rice, chicken, fajita veggies, pico de gallo, corn salsa, lettuce, and cheese.
I ate every single bite and wanted more.
After a long day of running around, I made it back home around 6 p.m. for just a few hours of down time before Scott and I needed to be back out the door for a special birthday celebration.
All week, we collaborated with Alex’s boyfriend, Alex (<- cute, right?), to take part of a small surprise celebration over dessert at The Melting Pot.
Happy Birthday, Alex!
We intentionally made her feel uncomfortably tall in this photo. Or at least Scott did, while I just made one of my weird faces. He’s such a treat.
If you’ve never been to The Melting Pot, it is a fondue restaurant where you cook your own meals and desserts. Since I hadn’t been in years, I was really looking forward to the dessert plate.
It comes with a standard plate of fruits, cakes, cookies, and marshmallows to dip into your choice of chocolate pot. Our table of four ordered the Bananas Foster (white chocolate, bananas, cinnamon) and Flaming Turtle (milk chocolate, caramel, and candied pecans) to dip in and ended up ordering additional fruit for both.
It was delicious!
Sunday
I planned to get up early and take Roadie for a run outside before church on Sunday. After snoozing several times, I deemed Sunday a morning to catch up on my sleep and allowed my body to rest.
After church, we grabbed lunch with the birthday girl at one of our favorite spots in Lake Orion for the best chips and salsa around.
(Sagebrush and hard cider for the win… again.)
Realizing I had already done my fair share in indulging for the weekend, I attempted to keep it light and ordered the Fajita Taco Salad without the shell with the dressing on the side.
Key word was attempted. That salad was seriously the size of my head, if not bigger. Somehow, I controlled myself and kept half of it for lunch today, which I am about two seconds from digging into.
I planned on getting home to take that run with Roadie I mentioned earlier, but instead spontaneity got the best of us and we ended up spending the rest of our day and night at this place. Any guesses as to what it is?
Okay, fine… I’ll tell you. It’s a custom tattoo shop called Tattoo Nouveau and is a great find for anyone looking.
Most of you already know this, but Scott is a tad nontraditional and has a full list of tattoos he wants to eventually get. He’s already inked with four, and yesterday marked lucky number five.
I told him to make a face for a photo, and although it looks like he’s being a baby, he handled it like a champ!
I guess needles and pain is kind of his thing.
It turned out a lot bigger than I originally expected, but I’m growing to love it more as time goes by.
For not having an appointment, the staff at Tattoo Nouveau was very accommodating and wonderful about squeezing us in and designing the work you see above all in one day. Both Dave and Marna are extremely talented and we both picked their brains with questions about tattoos the entire time we were there.
I even got talked into getting one! Kidding. Kind of.
Am I mean by not telling you the answer to this one? I guess you’ll have to check back later for it! 😉
And with that, our whirlwind of a weekend was over. Per usual, I’m linking the madness and marvelousness up with Katie and hope you’ve had a great start to your week so far.
Looking back on my weekend, I couldn’t help but notice the overall theme of eating my face off with no exercise to counter it. Every time that happens and Monday rolls around, I feel super sluggish and get disappointed in myself for it.
Like I said earlier, I’m all about indulging every once in a while, but every weekend for every meal is pretty excessive and is exactly why I’ve gained the little bit of weight I have. I’m ridiculous.
Here’s to finding that balance next time!
See you all in a bit with this month’s Stitch Fix break down!
Questions of the Day
• What was the best thing about your weekend?
• Do you have any tattoos? How many?
Kalley
White ink tattoo?! I have one of those on my wrist and I LOVE it. You don’t notice it if you aren’t looking for it, but every time I see it it makes me happy.
Heather
I love white ink tattoos! I think they’re so interesting!
Tiff
That sounds like a very marvelous weekend to me. Cheers!!
No tattoos here 🙂
Heather
Ha, crazy, yet marvelous. Happy Monday, Tiff!
Polly - TastyFoodProject.com
I still have never been to the Melting Pot before! I’ve been to other fondue places and loved it. I’m sure I’m missing out!
I don’t have any tattoos. I’m scared of needles! lol
Heather
You have to try it at least once, but be prepared for it to be a loooong dinner. At least two hours!
Rachel @ Blonde with a Chanse
What a fun weekend! All of the food you ate looks soooo yummy! I was actually sick this weekend, so I mostly just watched some good movies with my hubby. The best part of the weekend was probably snuggling my sleeping baby girl at church though. Baby snuggles are the best thing ever! I have been reading your blog for a couple of weeks now and you have an awesome writing style. You are also gorgeous girl!
Heather
Aw, I’m sorry you were sick… sometimes staying in with movies are the best weekends too. Thank you so much for reading!
Chrissy @ Pink Polish and Running Shoes
The best part of my weekend was running my first 5K. As for the tattoos, I don’t have any, but I’d love one on the back of my wrist.
Heather
Congrats on the 5K! Fun!
Kristine
I just turned on Jock Jams Radio… love it!!
Heather
I’m still listening to it! Love, love the tunes!
Sally
I have a small one that I’m looking to add to possibly. I haven’t exactly found what I want to add yet though so I’m not doing anything yet.
Heather
It’s so important to wait until you’re 100% positive of what you want! My rule is that I can seriously think about getting one only if I have it drawn out and LOVE it just as much a year later.
April V
Okay, so… thank you for getting me addicted to Jock Jams Radio… annnnd…. I absolutely CAN.NOT.WAIT. to see what lies behind this tattoo talk going on… eek! 😉
Heather
It IS addicting! And I promise not to lead you guys on too much longer 😉
Strength and Sunshine
O gosh. Isn’t the wrist a really sensitive spot for a tattoo! I heard the ribs is the worst though!
Heather
It can be, but not as bad as the foot and ankle! My first one was on my foot and that KILLED. Probably the worst 10 minutes of my life, but I got through it. 😉
Rachel Neben
All that food looks amazing! I am also a sucker for hard ciders and may or may not have had a few this weekend as well… I have my wedding song tattooed on my back between my shoulder blades. I love it and don’t regret it for a second. As long as it is meaningful to you, that is all that should matter.
Heather
That sounds so cool!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie
What a fun weekend! All the food looks amazing. I’m really trying to find balance with food. In the last year I’ve put on a lot of weight and now I’m working hard to get it off!
Heather
Finding and keeping a balance can always be a struggle! I feel you on the “trying”… 😉
Hillary
you gals look so cute in your pink dresses!
Heather
Thank you! We felt like complete goobers taking that picture because we were so matchy-matchy. Funny how that happens sometimes!
Leslie @ Life Begins at 30?
It looks like you had a fantastic weekend!! My favorite part of my weekend was a girls brunch on Sunday to celebrate my birthday. Bloody mary’s and omelets were a great combo with the fun conversations and laughs!
Heather
Love, love, love brunch with my girlfriends. Sounds marvelous!
aladygoeswest
I have so many comments on this one. First of all, I’m also one who totally does the cheat meal(s) on the weekends, as well as the wine. Second of all, I just played Cards Against Humanity for the first time recently and almost died it was so funny. Third of all, you guys sure have a lot of appearances when the season is over. Fourth of all, no tattoos for me. I’m scared of them! Let’s see yours!!
Hanna
It seems like you had a great weekend!! Sometimes it’s actually better for the mind and the body to just let go and let it happen! There’s always Monday to get back on track… you still look amazing! 🙂
Alycia
I have 6 tattoos and 3 more that I want. Love them all!
Whitney
That chicken fajita bowl from Qdoba looks amazing! My mouth is watering (doesn’t help that it’s lunch time). The best part of my weekend was watching the Girls on the Run team of 3rd-5th graders that I coach run their 5k race! No tatoos here. I’m a pain wimp. Even getting my nosed pierced just about did me in. :p
Heather
I’ve heard of Girls on the Run, what a great organization! Ahhh see, a nose piercing sounds way scarier to me!
Sarah
Looks like it was a fun weekend! Indulging is part of the game. Enjoy life and live it up! However, I do know what you mean – you start not feeling your best. Still…a superb weekend!
Heather
Exactly. It was fun though!
