When was the last time you got an eye exam?
Whether you’re in need of vision correction or not, it’s just as important for you to stay on top of your health with an annual check up as it is for you to eat a balanced diet, get enough exercise, and into the habit of getting plenty of sleep.
I have to admit that I haven’t been the best at keeping my annual appointments. Our health insurance has been all over the place this year, so I was truly excited and grateful when LensCrafters invited me to visit their newly renovated Global Store Design in Detroit, and to learn about the importance of maintaining optimal eye health by getting regular exams.
I had never been into a LensCrafters before, so I wasn’t sure what I would be walking into. What I experienced was above and beyond anything I expected.
Last week, I was asked to attend a private event at the LensCrafters location in the Twelve Oaks Mall (Novi area). My visit included a 9.am. eye appointment (AccuExam). I was greeted by a team of smiling faces upon my arrival, and I was impressed by the extremely clean and bright design of the newly renovated store!
As I filled out paperwork, I chatted with a couple of employees that were looking forward to having me experience the new technology. I was taken into a few different rooms and had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Mark Jacquot, Clinical Director and Vice President of LensCrafters, while I went through the initial tests and learned more about AccuExam.
Dr. Jacquot covered a variety of topics including how important it is to get your little ones into eye exams before it’s time for them to go off to school. In fact, he recommends bringing your baby in at six months! If all goes well, he said they wouldn’t need to return until their third birthday. It’s important to do so to be able to catch potential eye issues early on (like lazy eye, double vision, etc.), and in turn, prevent the severity of them. That was an interesting fact I will be sure to keep in my back pocket for the future.
Thanks to the AccuExam technology, I was able to skip the medicated dilation drops and get more information about my eye health than ever before.
The first machine measured my exact prescription for each eye, and all I had to do was stare at a hot air balloon. The next machine required the dreaded air puffs you’ve probably experienced before if you’ve ever gotten an eye exam. The purpose is to test eye pressure, and it wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d previously remembered.
I was taken into another room where I had to place each eye at a certain spot, and hold it at just the right position in order for them to take a photograph of each eye. This one really intrigued me!
I waited a few minutes before I was greeted by the optometrist, and then she took me into the exam room where she would re-test my prescription and go over an in depth analysis of the overall health of my eye.
First, Dr. Easter put my pre-measured prescription into the projector screen and took me through a series of tests to pinpoint the exact prescription I needed. Most eye exams I have experienced in the past make me feel slightly nervous for the mere fact that I might answer the “which one is better test” the wrong way. The “this or that, 1 or 2 approach” can get pretty confusing, right? Thankfully, the new technology and examination techniques eliminates the need for all of that.
Next, I saw a giant side-by-side picture of my eyes. She then zoomed into one at a time and explained everything she was looking for.
This fascinated me! (The creepy black things on the bottom are my eyelashes, ha.)
It amazed me that this digital view could eliminate the need to dilate eyes, and also allows the doctor to examine the patient in a much more reliable way. Luckily, she said my eyes looked like they were in great shape and didn’t show any signs of health risks like diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts, or other issues.
For the first time, I felt like I actually understood everything that was going on. Dr. Easter did a great job in explaining exactly what she was looking at, why, and then showed me problem eyes with issues for comparisons. It was reassuring to know that I’m doing pretty good!
The next part of my visit gave me an opportunity to pick out a new pair of glasses, and I was excited (slash overwhelmed) to do so. There’s just so many options!
I was pleasantly surprised when I walked out to find a helpful employee waiting for me with a tray of hand selected styles she thought I would like.
I loved all of the styles, but I never had that “wow” moment until she brought overt the brand new style of Tiffany & Co. frames I featured in last week’s Friday Favorites. They’re stunning!
Just to be sure, I took pictures of a few frame options on the myLook app to compare and help me make a final selection. I loved this part, and found it very helpful for someone to take photos for me and even send them over to friends for an outside opinion on which frames to choose.
Once I selected my frames, I was taken through all of the different lens features including scratch resistant, anti-glare, and HD upgrade options. It was really helpful to see the difference with a visual display, and it’s accessible to anyone who is wandering the store.
Once I was ready to check out, I was taken into the a private area called the Accufit Salon, which personalizes the customers’ eyewear and rounds out the final product choices.
An unusual contraption was placed onto my frames, and I was asked to take pictures to lock in final fitting measurements. It was strange, but cool to see.
The best part? It only took about an hour until I could take my glasses home! They fill most prescriptions in-house, which is not something that most offices do.
I was highly impressed with the AccuExam technology, the level of customer service, and the overall experience that changed going to the eye doctor something I had to schedule, to something I truly enjoyed.
Before my visit, I mentioned that my husband had never previously needed glasses, and that it had been ages since his last eye exam. Over the past few years, however, he has been questioning his vision and has even stolen my glasses from time to time!
I was completely surprised and grateful when LensCrafters generously welcomed Scott into the store for the same experience I received the day before. It was neat for me to go through the steps again, this time as an outside eye. And, what do you know, the guy needed glasses!
While his prescriptions are slight, they’re still worth correcting, and he ended up going with a bifocal frame that will help his sight near and far. For this reason, along with the HD lens upgrade, his glasses had to get shipped out versus filled in-house, and we should expect to have them by the end of the week.
As someone who has never had to wear glasses before, this was a big day for him! Welcome to the beautiful world of 20/20 vision, love.
He went with a gorgeous pair of matte Georgio Armani frames I’ll be sure to share close-ups of when they arrive.
Before I left, I was told about OneDay, an annual event where LensCrafters stores around the country provide eye care to underserved local communities. On December 10th, LensCrafters in Novi hosted 25 students and provided them with a free AccuExam and prescription glasses!
It’s obvious that LensCrafters, and specifically the Detroit store (at Twelve Oaks Mall) plays a great and helpful role in health care for the Detroit community.

Since my insurance only covers an exam once every two years… It’s been about a year and a half for me. I have visited a Lenscrafters before and actually hated my experience there. However, if my insurance covers this new exam… I might have to try it again, just at a different location!

I love the glasses you chose, Heather! I’m not crazy about my glasses and could have definitely benefited from using that comparison App. Very cool. I hadn’t thought of going to LensCrafters but now that I’m in search of a new eye doctor, I might give them a try if they take my insurance 🙂

i just had an eye exam…. in September? October? Recently. I have TERRIBLE vision, like legally blind vision, if i lose my contacts or glasses i need to have a guide. but luckily- this past eye exam they didn’t get worse! So I got to keep the glasses i have and just order more contacts. woo!

Oh man, you sound like me. I wasn’t as bad as my mom (I had Lasik surgery and she had PRK surgery in 2008), but I was pretty bad. I am all too familiar with being dependent on contacts and glasses. I’m so glad your glasses prescription stayed the same!
This time last year I got a new pair from lens crafters! Although I didn’t get my eyes checked their but I did the process of picking them out and I still love them! I love how you can pop into any lens crafters to get your glasses tightened as well!

I had an exam March, earlier this year. I have horrendous eyesight (like I cannot see the eyechart, nevermind the “E”). Luckily it has been stable the past few years though and I have just had to repurchase contacts. I, however, have been looking into Lasik but I am completely overwhelmed!
Amanda, if you see this, I had Lasik and it was the best decision ever! I had it when I was 22 since I was deploying to Iraq and didn’t want to deal with glasses, so my eyes have gotten worse over the years and I wear glasses to drive and watch TV, but still, amazing. I plan on getting it redone (I got a lifetime guarantee when I had it done) after I’m done having kids since pregnancy can cause vision changes and even now at 29, my eyes still get worse EVERY year. But, totally worth the money. Especially over a lifetime, you REALLY save big if you get Lasik instead of buying contacts/glasses all the time!

I had a similar situation with Lasik. I got surgery at 22, and now – 8 years later – need glasses for driving and watching movies. I plan to get it done again later on… but not just yet. Even so, definitely worth it! 😉
Oh girl, it sounds like you would very much benefit from Lasik surgery. I had it done in 2008, and there’s no way I could function (even just a little bit) without contacts or glasses at that point. Eight years later, I need glasses for driving (especially at night) and to watch movies, and even so, it was completely worth it. I have a lifetime guarantee on my surgery, so I will revisit it in the next decade. My vision only needs to be slightly corrected, so I can live with it. Let me know if you have any specific questions… I ended up working at the Lasik center I had my surgery at!
I really enjoyed reading your experience getting a new pair of glasses. Their office looks really nice! I live in NC and my last experience getting an eye exam was actually at LensCrafters. It was truly the worst experience ever from all aspects… scheduling, the receptionist, the actual eye exam, the eye doctor. But I’m glad you had a good experience! This post actually reminded me that I need to get an exam and new glasses before the end of the year 🙂

It’s been a year since I last had an eye exam but I know I need to have my vision checked soon as my prescription glasses have been giving me a headache. Your experience with LensCrafters looks like it’s definitely worth considering. 🙂
I didn’t know that it is recommended to get a baby an eye checkup and I think it’s nice for us parents to prevent if they have eye issues as early as possible. Most of us is just getting an eye checkup whenever we feel something that is not normal. Thanks for the tip!
I never been at a LensCrafter, but I can relate to how I haven’t checked up on my eyes for a while before. Until 2 months ago, it was like 3 years straight without a visit to my optometrist, Pinnacle Eye Group in Lambertville, MI 48144. But almost 3 months ago, my glasses broke and had no choice, but to go. So after a quick phone call I was set to go. Not going to lie, I felt a bit nervous, because my family has really, really bad vision, and at the moment mine aren’t so bad. So I feared mine deteriorated a lot over the years of not getting them checked. Bless my heart, that was not the case, my vision did not changed much, but I warned to stay away from staring at my screen in dark rooms. Normal I supposed, but all is well.
I am glad that you shared your trip to an optometrist clinic. I like that your optometrist advised you to take your kids to the clinic to catch potential issues early on. My daughter is having trouble with her vision because she sits on the back in class every time and we could use some help from an expert if we need to get her glasses as well.
